A majestic Mute Swan cob who came scaringly close. Taken from the bank of the River Soar just south of Leicester, England
Somewhere in deepest Leicestershire….
An ancient and decaying Oak tree in Bradgate Park, Leicestershire, England. Shot early one morning in June, 2007. A rework from the original “I’m Still Here!”
Today was a really good day to be out in the Leicestershire countryside. Loads of dramatic skies, lots of sunshine and not too much wind. I just wish I’d had more time to spend. Days like these are a photographer’s joy.
This is a view across the wolds in Leicestershire looking towards the sleepy little village of Croxton. 10 minutes later I was in the middle of a snow storm, and 20 minutes after that I was back in my car heading for home, by the time I drove through Croxton the snow had stopped and the skies were clear again!
Taken in a local area of what I term Pretty Land which has been a happy hunting ground for me over recent years with the camera – lots of paths, gated roads and easy access, with plenty to look at if you can be bothered to take the time – The nearest village is Mowsley. / Most folk miss this area by driving straight through the main road from Market Harborough to Lutterworth, yet either side of them are some of the most wonderful vistas in Leicestershire to photograph in the main light of day as opposed to early or late starts – but you do need a good old out of date OS map to find some of the paths and roads (and more ground clearance than I have under my car for some of them!)
A second landscape from the Mowsley/Laughton area of Leicestershire, UK. This image was featured as image of the day at Fotopic.net on 16th May 2008 / Not long ago, I posted this, below, from a location nearby. I love this land at this time of year. / If you like it and want to buy the pair, click this link to get the second. They look good as a pair on a wall, especially when toplit by a small bulb
Foston Lodge from Kilby Bridge in Leicestershire, under threatening stormy skies which dropped their load moments later. The farmland here lies next to the Grand Union canal, and is a catchment for the River Sence, which frequently floods, adding to the loads of the rivers Soar and Trent. This is my local area – a hunting ground of mixed fortunes photographically.
Bradgate Park, Leicestershire, UK – expanses of Bracken, interspersed with Oak. / A study of light on the landscape
A simple moment in time, life’s beauty, and a oneness with the greater world.
Taken a few miles east of Leicester, near Allexton. Its that time in the UK, just before the wheat gets harvested – heavy heads beginning to nod gently under the weight of the grain, and the weather unable to decide whether it is summer or not, threatening to flatten the crop, just it is ready. Leicestershire is full of distant horizons like this, and the Barley is all but in now, much of the ground already having been put under the plough in readiness for the next crop.
Thornton reservoir, Leicester, UK. The last of this general location I put up didn’t prove very popular – perhaps it was the balance of the image, or its darkness (my preference is for that kind of image usually), so here is one from half an hour later and a slightly different viewpoint.
Another rural Leicestershire image – at least it isnt Oilseed Rape, Wheat, Barley or Grass – I found something else instead! The location is just to the East of Barkby on the Eastern side of Leicester. The light on the oats, is mainly down to a recently finished bout of fine drizzle, and the droplets reflecting the sun breaking through.
Taken between Peatling Parva and Willoughby Waterlees, I found myself green laning in the dark, in uncharted territory this evening, and quite an adventure it turned out to be – some potentially unusual views to be taken advantage of when the light is different – heres hoping I can find the track again!
Back to the Leicester rural landscapes…..... / This was taken near the village of Ashby Magna. My timing could have been better – storm in the morning, sun at lunch, big fluffy clouds early afternoon, grey overcast later, then this. It is the opposite corner of the field in which I took Harvests Final Curtain a few days earlier.
This is a view across the fields of Leicestershire, looking north towards Lincolnshire, with rolls of freshly cut hay littering the fields, ready for winters first grip on the land.
There’s something mysterious about these berries.
Cropston Reservoir, illuminated some 8 miles outside the city by the light pollution from Leicester. Whilst the orange Sodium glow is visible to the naked eye at night, only with long exposures does it truly show…... / No chance of star trails whatever!
Decayed wood held by rusted iron. A section of an ancient barn door in Cosby, Leicestershire, England.
Summer breezes waft gently over growing barley near Lubbesthorpe, Leicestershire, UK, whilst an old Oak tree holds its place in the hedgerow beyond, watching hundreds of years of constant change. Sadly, this scene may soon be lost under concrete and brick as the city expands further to cater for our seemingly complex needs.
This shot was taken just before sunset on a sunny but bitterly cold and windy winter afternoon in Bradgate Park, Leicestershire. Additional information about this shot and my other work can be found on my blog

Don’t jostle, there’s room for all… Stoughton, Leicestershire
