This elderly woman sits at the window and contemplates the world outside. She does not see far beyond the window frame because her world has diminished considerably. Two years ago she was officially diagnosed with dementia after a life threatening surgery and long hospital stay. However, her family and friends noticed a difference in her personality over the last several years. Once a proud and hard working single mom, she raised two children during the 60’s and 70’s at a time when single parenthood was not as widely accepted as it is today. At present, she is reduced to little more than the passive demeanor of a quiet child. She is aware of the reduction in both her mental and physical abilities. She also understands that she is helpless to change anything. / It takes great courage to face the inevitable. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia; it accounts for 64 per cent of all dementias. For example right now in the US, Alzeihmer’s has surpassed diabetes and is the sixth leading cause of death. As baby boomers are rapidly approaching the age of retirement it is believed that 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s in their lifetime. Composite of multiple images of a derelict site in Eastern Washington. I wanted to use the images in some way, but it wasn’t until a model from ModelMeyhem offered to let me use this pic in one of my ‘creations’ that it came together. The descrepancy between her dress and manner….and the background just seemed to work to suggest an amusing anecdote…..Plus I love her posture….Thanks to Laura W for her image…...

Yesterday was the tapering of the autumn storm. Storm tears roofs and knock down trees. Best Viewed Larger This lovely old cabin is one of the first structures visitors see when they arrive at Old Bedford Village, a Living History Museum, in Bedford, PA. Many of the structures here are original to the general area. When their useful lives were over they were torn down and reconstructed on the site. Others are reproductions, meticulously crafted to represent their original counterparts. Image taken on October 17, 2009 with the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens, uv and cp filters attached. Shutter 1/320, aperture f/9.0, exp -.33, iso 250. Post processing included some work in levels and a hint of warm filter in Photoshop.
