  • My mother is blessed with a green thumb, as you can see. This beautiful plant is prominently displayed in her flower garden near Atlanta, GA. Despite the severe drought and very stringent water restrictions, she somehow kept all of her flowers in “show ready” condition last summer. This photo was captured with a Canon DSLR camera and Canon EF 28-80mm f/2.8-4L zoom lens. Shot at f/6.7 @ 1/350 sec. zoomed to 58mm focal length. A Manfrotto tripod and “joy-stick” head was used. © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist. • Another image taken with my Canon 5D Mark II. Canon EF 180mm Macro f/3.5L / 1/10 sec f/22 ISO100

  • This isn’t my work, it is nature’s artful expression. All I had to do was focus and shoot. This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro prime lens. The shutter speed was .5 sec at f/13, no flash. The camera’s ISO was set to 400. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release. Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated. © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist. • Underside of Rumex (Dock/Sorrel) – a red form, one of 200 in the family. This image is another to allow me to re-focus my mind – the vastness of landscapes have been my forte of late, so I thought I would have a play with macro today – the tiny orange dots are the stomata – these are tiny cell structures found on the outer plants skin layer, also known as the epidermis. Each consists of two specialized cells, called guard cells that surround a tiny pore called a stoma. The word stomata means “mouth” in Greek. They allow communication between the internal and external environments of the plant. Their main function is to allow gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapour and oxygen to move rapidly into and out of the leaf, enabling the plant to breathe. Taken with a Sony A700, modified bellows, old Soligor M42 lens – 70-200, with the leaf placed upside down on opaque plastic and lit from underneath with a remotely triggered Vivitar flash. Oh – the magnification factor? Dunno – bellows on max – area of leaf approx 1.5cm x 1cm.
