A bit of sunrise light over the West Maui Mountains and Lanai and a powerful sea ebbing and flowing over the rugged lava rock off the coast of Kihei. The way the ocean seemed to fold before me as I stood on rock had me in awe of the beauty of nature

The Alien landscape inside the creater of Haleakala on Maui, Hawaii as the sun rises over the horizon. IT was freezing cold up there with a temp of about 40 and winds of 25mph or more. We got up at 3AM to make it there for sunrise and watched the temp drop almost 40 degrees as we made out ascent.

A veritable seaside cauldron of stone nearly boiling over with the rising tides at sunset near Kihei with the West Maui Mountains capped by clouds in the distance.

Thanks for all the comments! This is a macro closeup of the lava lamp on my desk, taken a little while after I shook it to make it DO something! The photo was rotated 180 degrees to take advantage of the light reflecting off the tapered part of the glass, which I thought made it look more like the bubbles were being ‘spawned’. Saturation was increased, but the colours are real.

A colorful sunrise illuminates the clouds over the West Maui Mountains as the tides ebb over a lava rock shelf creating the impression the ocean is draining before my eyes.

Blubber Boy / Once there was a girl whose lover drowned. / Nothing to console her could be found. / She took a chunk of blubber from a whale. / And carved herself another to perfect scale! - Regurgitator

In an obscure lava tube on the Big Island of Hawaii we could see eyes appear from within the cave.

Officially the civil war has ended in Congo. Sadly, in reality, this is untrue. Militias ravage villages, raping women, abducting young men for combat, dismembering the population and creating massive displacement. Everyday. Those who make it to Goma live amongst the lava infused earth, a result of a massive eruption two years ago. Water and food are scarce, homes are built of mud or flattened food tins. These kids live and play amongst trucks half swallowed by lava.

Nakalele Blowhole truly a miracle of nature. A shelf of lava rock on the north shore of Maui eroded by the punishing sea until the waves created a vent that spews like a geyser off and on and when the llight of late afternoon hits the spray the miracle of rainbow color becomes apparent.

Mt. Bromo smolders uncomfortably close to the Indonesian metropolis of Surabaya on the island of Java. Bromo is the small, grayish cone to the left. Mt. Semeru, the highest mountain on Java, looms in the distance. The entire area is contained within the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. The area is inhabited mainly by the Tengerese People, the last Hindus left on Java.

Really honest to goodness lava rock as spewed out of a volcano – luckily now cold and solidified

Chile’s Chaiten volcano has erupted, spewing lava and blasting ash more than 12 miles into the sky – and prompting officials to order a total evacuation of the surrounding area. Let us remember everyone in our thoughts today.

I live on top of one of the most geologically active areas on earth, the Cascadia Subduction Zone of the Pacific Northwest. There are literally hundreds of both dormant and active volcanoes in this region, the most infamous being Mount St. Helens in the southwest region of the state of Washington. There are many national parks and monuments that have been set aside here to preserve the extremely long history of this volcanic activity, where you can experience the awesome power of these events up close and personal. / / One of these adventures took my wife and I to Ape Cave lava tube, which is the longest lava tube (12,810 feet or 3.9 kilometers) in the continental United States (similar tubes are found in Oregon, California, and Idaho) and one of the longest in the world. During volcanic eruptions, lava flows tend to become ‘channeled’ into a few main streams. Overflows of lava from these streams solidify quickly and plaster on to the channel walls, building natural levees or ramparts that allow the level of the lava to be raised. Lava streams that flow steadily in a confined channel for many hours to days may develop a solid crust or roof and thus change gradually into streams within lava tubes. Because the walls and roofs of such tubes are good thermal insulators, lava flowing through them can remain hot and fluid much longer than surface flows. Tube-fed lava can be transported for great distances from the eruption sites. / / This artwork was inspired by how my imagination envisioned the creation of a lava tube. It is actually two fractals I created and then composited, with a great deal of post-processing work done in both Photoshop and PSP8. The original is very large, 48 inches square, so many of the details can’t really be seen. / / I have included a link below to a fun and well done website that will let you further explore the world of lava tubes should you find these as fascinating as I do. / / The Virtual Lava Tube / / Thanks for the visit! Peace & Love, / / Grouchy ;)

Mt. Bromo smolders uncomfortably close to the Indonesian metropolis of Surabaya on the island of Java. Bromo is the low profile, greyish cone in the left foreground. Mt. Semeru looms in the distance. This is certainly the most striking landscape in the Indonesian Archipelago.
