  • If you have ever visited the 12 Apostles you will know how bad the weather can turn and the howling wind that blasts off the ocean into you as you stand on the observation platform. Standing waiting for the sun to set over the 12 Apostles I happened to look behind myself and I saw this powerful rainbow reaching for the sky and its twin. Knowing how quickly rainbows can appear and disappear I picked up my camera tripod (camera attached) and low pro backpack and sprinted in the puring rain along the slippery wooden decking to the Gibson Beach Lookout. I set up wiped my camera down popped up my umbrella and started shooting. Right place, Right time…. great shot. site: www.mattlauder.com.au / blog: www.mattlauder.wordpress.com.

  • I owned a Hasselblad 6×6 for a short time until I sold it to Ken Duncan’s assistant Glenn (top bloke) to pay for a down deposit on an exhibition I ran. The sacrifices you have to make. I had always wanted to shoot the bridge from this view but my G617 had no chance but the 40mm on this camera was more than enough. Hasselblad 6×6 | 40mm lens | Velvia 50 site: www.mattlauder.com.au / blog: www.mattlauder.wordpress.com.

  • Taking this shot can be a real pain in the ass. My exposure time was around two minutes but in that time a tour bus can arrive at any time and about a minute into my exposures one would and all the occupants walk to the viewing deck in front of the falls and stand there. So to get just one shot without blurred people took about 4 exposures. Arrr…. !!

  • Approaching storms make for the most dramatic light and this is just one example. Taken on a Hassselblad 6×6 with a 40mm lens I was able to capture the incoming surf and the mood of the storm as it made it’s way to the coastline. After taking this shot I was soaked to the bone by the torrential rain. The shot is straight from the camera.

  • Caught this scene off the highway on my return to Melbourne. Using a polariser on the shot really made the clouds stand out and almost look un natural. But the contrast between blue and yellow is lovely. / One tip with using your polariser is to not over do it, as you can make your blues turn almost black and it can really wreck what should have been a great shot.

  • I woke up at 3am to get this shot. I drove to the NSW and Victoria border and I got there well before sunrise. Dead tired a had a little snooze in the car and woke up to see the sun rising. I almost slept through the whole reason to get there early. / I set up and snapped this shot. I love the look and feel of the dead trees in the water. This body of water is the Murray River. Shot taken in Victoria looking towards NSW.

  • I searched on the net and emailed quite a few mountain bike groups trying to find this place. I didnt get far with my inquiries so I headed out and looked for it myself. Parked my car at the end of Ridgeway Road in Blackheath and walked for ages along this dirt road. After what seamed like hours I finally found Hanging Rock. I have heard that the end of this great outcrop has recently fallen away. Such a shame. Fuji G617 panoramic on velvia slide film. For more images of mine visit www.mattlauder.com.au

  • For some reason I really love this image… on a day without clouds in the late afternoon I stood in the swampy shallows… my thongs got sucked into the silt and I lost them. Standing in water up to my knees to get the right angle and composition. I think it is the leading lines and the jetty that appears to extent into the horizon that I like the most.

  • I just did a recent trip to the Mid Nth Coast of NSW and the weather was far appealing but I headed out anyway and when shooting I used a three shot ND filter to really pull in the sky. I love this shot as there is so much to look at and then you have the lighthouse on the top of the hill.

  • On a recent trip to Melbourne for a wedding I had high hopes of taking a lot of shots around the area but that was not the case. With 24 hours of shooting I was blessed with an awesome sunset followed by a rainy overcast sunrise which at the time I cursed. So I did a nice long exposure and this was the result. Which some friends have told me is one of their favorites. / Shot on my Linhof 90mm, no ND filter, Velvia 50.

  • On my travels to the Grampians I really wanted a nice shot of the “Balconies” but my Fuji G617 with its 105mm lens made the composition too tight so I had to look elsewhere on sunset for a nice composition and this was it. A nice trade off I think.

  • One of my first shots from my new Canon 1ds Mark II. I find shooting towards the sun on a clear day gives unflattering light (especially on digital). So I decided to go more for a composition than an open landscape.

  • This is one of my first digital panoramics done with my 1ds Mark II. The final file size is around 320MB @ 300dpi and the resolution at actual pixles is amazing and with no grain unlike you get when shooting slide film. The image is a single row of 7 images joined in PTGui with about a 130 degree view. I love the old boat in this shot.

  • Today – Sunday 27th of July 2008 – I was teaching a one on one course with a couple and the day started nice and sunny. About 3.30pm this storm started to roll in. In 9 years of shooting landscapes I have never been able to be in a position to see a sight like this unveil before me and it was an amazing sight. There was sheet lightening in the cloud as well but it was to hard to capture. We left the beach just in time and boy did it bucket down in rain and hail. This storm made the 6pm news. This shot is 8 images shot at 24mm (Canon 1ds Mark II) and covers about 270 degree view of Freshwater Beach on the Northern Beaches. Crazy stuff. For me this is what landscape photography is all about. Also shot it on my Fuji G617 on Velvia slide. Best viewed large **

  • Out shooting yesterday (5th Aug 08) and saw these pelicans watching and getting scraps from fishermen cleaning their catch at the boat wharf on Terrigal Beach. I chucked my 70-200mm on and saw the potential of this shot when a Pelican faced me. This was one of three shots the other two had his beak to the left and right. Would make a nice three image shot. But this is my favorite. Shot on Canon 1ds Mark II Check out the blog at www.mattlauder.wordpress.com Main site: www.mattlauder.com.au

  • As someone who shoots digital and slide film at a professional level I am always out shooting and thinking of new ways to advance myself not only as a photographer but also as a teacher of the art. The images below are a series I shot last night – 12th August 2008 of a glorious sunset over Terrigal Beach on the the Central Coast. The shots are taken with my new digital workflow technique where I am able to capture a scene with a huge dynamic range in a single exposure. All images are panoramic stitches taken on a Canon 1ds Mark II | 90% of the images are processed in Adobe Camera RAW (well taken original images are essential) then moved into CS3 for final touches (sharpening, dust removal, colour cast removal, minor cropping to 3:1 ratio). All images are approx 400MB @ 300 dpi. This new work flow is now taught in all my courses. See my main website www.mattlauder.com.au for course dates and locations. www.mattlauder.wordpress.com to follow my digital workflow updates. Happy shooting

  • While running my Sydney City photography course on Saturday (13th Sep 08) I took this panoramic of the Opera House. I wanted to create something different through creative composition to show the students that it isn’t all about wide angle shots. How this shot was made from Camera RAW development through to Photoshop post production is available as a high resolution download on my website below under “Tutorials” site: www,mattlauder.com.au / blog: www.mattlauder.wordpress.com

  • Taken on the road from Stow to Lauder in the Scottish Borders.

  • This shot has one “Picture of The Week” on the website: www.dphotographer.co.uk This tree is around half a mile from the “Lauder Highway” shot.

  • The Lauder Cornet bears the standard over Lauder Common. / The common ridings in the Borders are a must for tourists. Most Border towns have a festival to celebrate the history and traditions of the community. These events are steeped in history and strengthen the bond between the locals and the town. Pride and history all tied up with a great spectacle, community spirit and a friendly welcome. In this picture, the Cornet, at the head of some 300 riders, is off to the Waterin Stane to lead the town in the singing of Jeannie’s black e’e. the words written by Hector MacNeill (1746-1818). The sun rose sae rosy, the grey hills adorning, / Light sprang the lav’rock and mounted sae hie, / When true to the tryst o’ blythe May’s dewy morning, / Jeannie cam’ linkin’ out ow’r the green lea’. / Tae mark her impatience, I crep’ ‘mang the brackens, / Aft, aft tae the kent gate she turn’d her black e’e; / Then lying doon sae dowilie, sigh’d by the willow tree, / “I am aslep, dinna wauken me”. Saft thro’ the green birks I stole to my jewel, / Strek’d on spring’s carpet aneath the saugh tree, / “think na, dear Lassie, that Willie’s been cruel,” / “I am asleep, dinna wauken me”. / “Wi love’s warm sensations I’ve marked your impatience, / Lang hid midst the breckans I watch’d your black e’e; / You’re no sleepin, pawkie Jean, open that lovely e’e”. / “I am asleep, dinna wauken me”. Please see the link for a bit more. .

  • This is the original treatment for the shot of Lauder Highway.

  • This shot is from one of those mornings when you wake up and as you drive closer to the coastline you see the potential of what is about to follow. Not only was the sunrise sensational the light that followed after the sun breached the horizon was also perfect light to shoot with. All in all a fantastic morning of shooting. This one is shot on my Fuji GX617 with Velvia 50. site: www.mattlauder.com.au / blog: www.mattlauder.wordpress.com.

  • When I was on my way to Kata Tjuta I saw this small object on the road. As I got closer I saw this little “Devil” basking in the sun on the bitumen road. So I stopped and relocated him to a much safer location. I then grabbed the 1ds and took a couple of snaps. The best view was to get as low as possible. So here I am laying on the red dirt, spinifex digging into my back and camera in hand with these tourist buses flying by. I’m sure it was a funny sight to the international tourists but it would be no surprise to the bus driver who is probably thinking “Stupid photographer” site: www.mattlauder.com.au / blog: www.mattlauder.wordpress.com.

  • Taken on the Central Coast of NSW this shot is an exposure blend of three images +1, 0 and -1 EV using a 10 stop filter. Shot on the Canon 5D Mark II I have made the full post production of this image as a down loadable Photoshop tutorial that is on my website.
