  • This is the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, it is the largest steerable radio telescope in the world. It stands at 485 foot high, the dish’s diameter is 110 meters, it weighs a good 17 million pounds. / This is located in Green Bank, West Viriginia. The friend I stayed with has a friend who works at the observatory. He did get clearance to take us to the top!! Which they do not allow the public to be on it. Yep, I was at the top of this massive telescope!!! We rode two elevators to get there, my friend and I almost backed out going the rest of the way up as we looked thru a grated floor at the ground. Thanks to her friend ignoring our fears about being so high, basically coaxed us up further. I have no regrets about dealing with my respect of Serious heights and going up. Unfortunately I wasnt able to take my camera due to it being a digital camera that would interfere with the data the telescope retrieves. / The view I cant put into words of what it was like, words just wouldnt do it justice. It like to have driven me nuts not being able to capture this with photos. / The autumn colors were in full force, the sky a beautiful blue with white clouds hovering over us and the other telescopes they have on the land. I will upload day shots of this later. / My friend was a trooper getting up at 5am, for me to get this telescope with a full moon lingering over it. / If interested in learning more about this massive telescope, just check out Green Bank Telescope / There are a few other links about the other telescopes and this one. / And yep yep, the color Finally came back to my knuckles after we got back on solid ground! :) Shot this in Manual mode on bulb setting with ISO of 800, f-stop at 11 / Best if viewed larger

  • This image was taken on the Berry College campus in Rome, Georgia. The Berry campus is the largest campus in the world at nearly 30,000 acres. It consists of fields and forest and mountains lands which have designated portions open to the public for hiking, cycling, horse back riding, and other outdoor activities. The large deer population is reputed to outnumber the students by eight to one! About half the campus is a wildlife refuge where no hunting is allowed. The other half (almost 16,000 acres) is managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources where hunts are managed in an attempt to control the deer population and provide recreational opportunities within department regulations. With a permit fishing is allowed on some of the campus lakes and streams. Other wildlife often seen on campus are wild turkeys, seasonal ducks and geese, skunks, and squirrels. Please don’t copy or download this image. My photos may NOT be reproduced and/or used in any form without my written permission. • This is the largest privately owned Confederate Cemetery in the US. It is located on the Carnton Plantation in Frankling Tennessee.

  • General Sherman is the name of a Giant Sequoia with a height of 275 feet (83.8 metres). As of 2002, the volume of its trunk measured about 1487 cubic meters, making it the largest non-clonal tree by volume. The tree is located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in the United States, east of Visalia, California. The tree is believed to be between 2,300 and 2,700 years old. In 1879, it was named after American Civil War general, William Tecumseh Sherman, by naturalist James Wolverton, who had served as a lieutenant in the 9th Indiana Cavalry under Sherman. The tree was identified as the largest, in a 1931 dispute involving the nearby General Grant tree, after which wood-volume was the widely accepted determining-factor. In January 2006 the largest branch on the tree (seen most commonly, in older photos, as an “L” or golf-club shape, protruding from about 1/4th down the trunk) broke off. There were no witnesses to the incident, but the branch—bigger around than the trunks of most trees, with a diameter of over 2 m (6 feet) and a length of over 30 m (100 feet)—smashed part of its enclosing fence and cratered the pavement of the walkway surrounding the sequoia. The breakage, however, is not believed to be indicative of any abnormalities with the tree’s health, and may even be a natural defense-mechanism against adverse weather conditions. The branch loss did not change the General Sherman’s status as the largest tree, as its size has been calculated using measurements of trunk volume, excluding branches. /

  • One evening few years ago I was walking at the Kings Cross suburb of Sydney. It was already dark, but a high-rise building above me did not have a single light in any of its 350 rooms. It was a somewhat scary to stand by this huge abandoned giant in a centre of the city. The sign on the top read “Millennium Hotel”. My mind started to picture apocalyptic stories about what might have happened to it in few years past the new millennium. I didn’t know that time that it was closed for the complete renovation. And here we go, $98m and few years later building is transformed into modern 37-storey Zenith Apartments tower. What a stunning view over the city it must be from its roof top. P.S. The Coca Cola Billboard is a character itself being the heritage-listed and largest billboard in the Southern Hemisphere. This is a vertical panorama or a vertorama as it is called sometimes. I took 2 sets of 3 AEB shots from a tripod (one centering on the Coke sign and another one for the top of the building). Those were later combined into a single HDR (4129×4720) and then tonemapped. • WILLAMETTE MISSION STATE PARK (Brooks, Oregon, USA) Willamette Mission is one of the most significant and beautiful historic sites in the Willamette Valley. The park occupies land where the first mission for American Indians was founded in 1834 by the Reverend Jason Lee. Members of the Methodist Mission were later active in the formation of Oregon government. A monument is located in the park providing information on this settlement. The original mission buildings are represented by framed outlines called ghost structures. A landing for the Wheatland Ferry - the first to carry the covered wagon across the Willamette River in 1844 - is in the park. The park offers many daytime opportunities for boaters, anglers and other users. Some of Willamette Mission’s 1,680 acres hold filbert and walnut orchards. The nation’s largest black cottonwood is in the park (it’s older than the U.S. —it’s been around for over 250 years). There are grassy meadows surrounded by an array of flowers, plants, and trees. For those that enjoy water, there’s Mission Lake and the Willamette River.
