Luang Prabang —Laos uploaded again for the b&w group
This photograph was taken during my travels in Laos, South East Asia. My buddies and I were traveling along the Mekong River by slow boat towards a small town called Luang Probang. Half way through the journey we stopped off at a small village. In this dusty village were wooded huts for houses and lots of children running around (when I say lots I really do mean LOTS). Amongst the children were women trying to sell us beads, bracelets and various garments just to make a dolor. We quickly learned how the families lived together as a community despite not having the basic commodities, technologies and resources which we take for granted. The children seemed very happy to meet us and took a large interest in our cameras and laughed when we showed them their pictures.

Hill-tribe children, Northern Laos 2008
The Akha People are one of the many tribal groups living in the Golden Triangle – the area where the borders of Burma, Laos and Thailand meet. Their traditional dress is probably the most flambouyant among these groups. This lady was photographed near the town of Kengtung, Burma. I’ve been told that Akha Ladies rarely remove their elaborate headdresses – even sleeping in them.

Young girl, hill tribe village, Laos 2008. This photograph was taken during a trekking trip in the countryside north of Luang Prabang. The local children were fascinated by the visitors to their village.
Stayed at a friends house in Vientiane where I shot this from his balcony. His balcony in Laos looks over the Mekong River at Thailand. Every day around 4pm you can hear the beats of drums from the monks on the Thai side reverb with the beats of drums from the monks on the Laos side. Canon EOS 40D More Asia Photographs /

Family in a rural village in Laos. Laos was a French colony at the start of the 20th century. It was a union of two former kingdoms, Luang Prabang and Vientiane. After World War II, French Indo-China was divided up into three independent countries within the French Union: Cambodia, Laos (independent on 1949-07-19), and Vietnam. Staying over night in the village, at the whimsical invitation of a woman I met on a local bus, was one of the best chances I ever took on my travels. Spending a couple days with the children, families and elders of this village will remain one of my most memorable of experiences. They were all precious!!!
