Hillarys Lighthouse, Perth, Western Australia. The lighthouse structure is only about 20 years old, but the lantern has an longer history, starting life in the Bedout Island lighthouse, 30km off the coast of Port Hedland in the north of W.A. La Rue Obscure is the oldest street in the old town of Villefranche sur Mer on the French Riviera, between Nice and Monaco. It was built on virgin soil at the beginning of the 13th century. La Rue Obscure formed the basis of the rest of the town’s construction on the slopes rising from this coastal lane. It gave inhabitants of the town certain refuge against possible attacks. The ship captains who were forced by storms to anchor in the bay, could make necessary repairs in safety. La Rue Obscure also welcomed precious merchandise, such as wine, in its cellars.

I finally bought a simple macro lens for my new camera and this is my first official macro shot I’m adding. This is actually tiny (about 3-4cm or just over 1 inch) dried up piece of twisted grape vine I picked off the fence with a water drop which was reflected by the sun. It’s definitely different to my usual work but why not?! It reminds me of a lantern..

This is Fushimi Inari in Kyoto. A Shinto Shrine with thousands of vermilion torii lining the paths on the hill on which the shrine is located. One of Kyoto’s oldest (founded in 711 AD) and most revered Shinto shrines, Fushimi Inari serves as the headquarters for all the 40,000 shrines dedicated to Inari across Japan. / Dedicated to Inari, the god of rice, sake, and prosperity. / It was featured in the film Memoirs of a Geisha.

An old lantern next to the entrance to the Virgin Mary Visitation church in Hejnice, Jizera mountains, Czech Republic. I feel that giving light is very symbolic for this place where the pilgrimage roads from several countries cross since the 13th century… February 2002. Canon EOS 500N, Sigma 28-135. Post-processing: retouch, blend-modes, color correction, watercolor.

You have already learned what the “Flylands Series” is about…....(there is a description in “Gate-Traveller – Flylands No1). So this one shows us a Japanese part of the bursted Earth….a lonely Geisha watches out for other survivors, she hopes the eagle might have a message for her! She carries the light which is necessary to put all the flylands together again, in order to form the entire planet new. This light is kept in the antique Japanese lantern. But at the moment, there is no way for the Geisha to leave her little flyland!..... to be continued
