The Gellone Abbey, village of Saint Guilhem le Désert. A jewel of Romanesque art, this sanctuary founded at the beginning of the / 9th century is one of the most important spiritual and cultural hearths of Languedoc. It had enjoyed through the centuries the blessings of its holy founder and the presence within its walls of the treasures which it shelters. Today, it is inscribed as a World Heritage Site with UNESCO under the title / of the Paths of Saint James Pilgrimage in France. “This Gellone Valley is a place so removed that anyone who loves solitude will find it here. / Everywhere one finds oneself surrounded by very high mountains and it can only be to pray and meditate that one would come to such a retreat”. / Ardon, disciple of Saint Benoît of Aniane

This quaint little place is in the small town of Fanjeaux, Languedoc. I first noticed the washing hanging up outside the house, only when I looked closer did I spot the rash of circles. I wonder who lives in a house like this…..

Fabrezan is located in the midst of the Corbières vineyards, famous for their robust red wines. It is easily accessible, being only 40 minutes from Carcassonne airport and 5 minutes from the A61 autoroute. It is equidistant from the historic cities of Narbonne and Carcassonne which may both be reached in less than half an hour. As a celebration of family life the residents of Fabrezan frequently display large photographs of family groups, individual family members and even family members who are deceased, some of these images measure 120X90 cm and as can be seen, are hung outdoors, which I found to be a profoundly sentimental experience. The Orbieu river, which curves around Fabrezan, is popular with fishermen, while upstream in the neighbouring village of Ribaute, only ten minutes away, it is ideal for swimming, paddling or just sunbathing on the rocks.
Located mid-way between Fanjeux and Mirepoix.
The fortified Château at Montsegur is perched at a height of 3900 ft, and despite various theories as to its origins, the ruins of the current site at Montségur are not actually the work of the Cathars. It was the theatre of terrible events in the year 1244, and the fortress was , to a large part, remodeled in the second half of the 13th century. The place however remains haunted by a painful past: more than 200 Cathar priests found death in this mythical place, burnt at the stake as heretics for their alternative Christian faith in a huge inferno. Eight centuries after, the flames from this past age still fuel speculation and rumour. Even in Winter the climate is so forgiving, the atmosphere so enchanting and the light, that brilliant blue that you see so often in the mediterranean, that unbelievable blue. It is no surprise that so many people fall in love with the South, and Spain is only an hour further South. Heaven. Technical Camera : D80 / Lens : nikkor 18-200mm VR / Exposure : 1/80Sec / Aperturer : F16.0 / Program : Manual / Light : Bright Winter Sun / Flash : Not fired / FocalLength : 70.00(mm)
An old converted 13th century windmill overlooking the beautiful countryside in the southeast of France near Carcassone. This windmill and another smaller one next to it are rented out, and last year my husband and I and another couple stayed there. We called it our Lilliputian Mushroom! Definitely cosy but so peaceful! The view was incredible and I had to keep reminding myself that the mill was over 700 years old!
These beautiful Carmargue horses belong to the owners of a converted windmill which we rented in the Languedoc in Montlaur, France. They are retired horses who have the run of about 5 acres of property. Lucky horses!
The Corbieres hills above Fontfroide Abbey in the Langeudoc region of southern France. Beautiful views and hiking paths can be found in this scenic area which were covered in forsythia while we were there. Sony Cybershot DSC-T1
La Couscouillette, Montlaur, Languedoc, France Part of the beautiful view from the hillside patio of one of the windmill cottages we rented on the property called La Couscouillette in the rural area of Montlaur. Unfortunately, while we were there, it was too windy to open the umbrella and sit awhile, but what a beautiful place to sit on a sunny spring morning!
