In the Native American Sioux language Hanyewi means Moon Translated by Chief Yellow Lark – 1887 Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds / Whose breath gives life to the world, hear me / I come to you as one of your many children / I am small and weak / I need your strength and wisdom May I walk in beauty / Make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. / Make my hands respect the things you have made / And my ears sharp to your voice. / Make me wise so that I may know the things you have taught your children. The lessons you have written in every leaf and rock / Make me strong! / Not to be superior to my brothers, but to fight my greatest enemy….myself Make me ever ready to come to you with straight eyes, / So that when life fades as the fading sunset, / May my spirit come to you without shame. LINES Lines on a piece of paper, / Lines upon the earth; / The mark of human hands - / Or aliens at work? / Mortal information, / Or a message from beyond? / A cryptic code without a key / Or a simple human bond? / Search for honest answers, / Leave no stone unturned, / Pen to paper, leave your mark, / The witches can’t be burned. / Who wields the staff of Isis? / When Excalibur is lost? / It’s a long time between rainbows – / The pot of gold has turned to dust. / See dull and programmed adults / Follow the well-worn track, / They cannot look for miracles / While a key turns in their back. / Chalk drawings in a cave, / Scribbles on a bedroom wall, / Hieroglyphics in a tomb, / Their meaning eludes us all. / Somehow a page is missing, / In the instruction book of life, / Read between the lines – / Get information at any price. / Crayons in baby fingers / Don’t step upon the cracks. / Boundaries are made for crossing, / We must bring the magic back. / Children go out of lines, / Drawing colours of their youth, / Lines might be for guidance, / But erase them to find your truth.

One night I awoke to see a light beaming down from the sky. / It shone through the roof and onto the bed where I lay. / It seemed as if the moon was alive and burning right through to touch my very soul. In the light the energy uplifted me, I felt no pain, no confusion, no tiredness, only clarity and peace and a deep deep sense of love. I revelled in the glow. / And I knew I had to share what I had discovered. “Create it, and they will come” said the voices. / I had a vision of people from all over the world travelling to this place to stand in the light, to find healing, and solace, and wisdom and peace, to know the meaning of love. / I knew that if I could indeed create it, and share the message with the people, that they would come and stand in the light with me. And there would be an end to their suffering. But my task was to find the words to describe what I had seen, and to create images to share my vision. What language would the spirit recognize, what words would the heart understand? I was merely one woman and yet my heart wanted to share with the universe. I was afraid to open my mouth for fear of being ridiculed, scorned or worse still, just ignored. What could I say or do that could convey the message my heart held? So in the deepest part of my being, where the creative muse dwells and plays as a child, I summoned my courage and faith that the language of the heart would be loud enough and clear enough to reach the minds and ears of the world. And I trusted that when I spoke, the people would listen, when I opened my eyes and raised my hands, the people would see. So I created, / and I believed in magic…... / and I knew that with true love….. / words are not necessary when the heart speaks. So I brought my message to the world in a language that they could understand. / And then I waited….. (“From the Heart of the Muse”......an ageless tale for modern times / by “sunshiine”...)

I’ve recently been asked by Red Bubble to choose my favourite writing, and so I poured the honey vodka, put on some slide guitar, and spent longer than was good for me floating through the writing and journals here. And I need to ask – where are the languages?! Yes, I know English is the lingua franca of the world and the best way to get your writing noticed. I sympathise with this, I do, but I ache for the beauty of expressing yourself in another tongue. When we force our focus away from our mother tongue, we embrace the world in a whole new manner, and see shades of incandescence and identity that may otherwise be denied us. When I read or write in Dutch, in German, in French, the words don’t come easily and so I strive for them more, turn them over in my head and my heart, and notice their shades and subtleties in ways I simply wouldn’t in English. It’s not easy; I know this. I make mistakes, and hesitate when I write in other tongues in case I trip over verb tenses, mangle my syntax or accidentally call someone a piece of fruit when I intended to be seductive (don’t ask). But it’s just so delicious to read…… Who can read or write in other languages, and if so, do you actively seek these languages out on Red Bubble? For those with other mother tongues, do you put stories up in English out of necessity or desire? Ik wil in het Nederlands lezen…. Je veux lire en français… Ich will auf Deutsch lesen. Or at least try. And after two years of Irish lessons, I would love to read in that amazing language but alas, all I can do is insult someone, and order a whiskey. But at least I haven’t compared my lovers to summer fruit in that language…..or have I?!

by bellmuskerI have…held a decapitated human head in my hands, sliced neatly in half, and marvelled at the astounding beauty contained within.
I wrote this piece for a zine in the US. The aim was to write your life story in only a few hundred words, and it was surprising for me to see which of my experiences flowed out of my pen.

Chinese characters for Scotland From top to bottom: First character – Su is the sound of S in chinese noise :)) / Second character – Ge means the plaid patterns on your “skirt”( I called a kilt skirt all the time before:) / Third character-Lan means the plant, flower—orchid, it sounds as “land”also. We gave that word and sound to a green rich land such as, Holland, Ireland Every Chinese character represents the nearest sound, shape and the meaning in depth for that word. That’s our language. I will be a teacher for Mandarin Chinese in the near future. Welcome you all to study another language, culture, and way of thinking…. I have got yours already :)) ha ha…. somehow. Coffeetea

Image by photographer Glennis Siverson, www.glennisphotos.com. This was captured at a park in Beijing, China, where an elderly man had just finished painting watermarks on the sidewalk. In China, there are many people who practice calligraphy in public places, using water as their ink and the ground as their paper. Very large brushes are required and they look a bit like a giant felt tip pen. (For perspective, the characters in this image are about a foot in length.) Although the writing is temporary since the water evaporates, it’s an informal public display of one’s work, and an opportunity to practice calligraphy, which is taught in the schools.

This Eastern bluebird female was in a frenzy in the treetops. A male sparrow had invaded her nest and she was beside herself as she helped her mate try to oust it from their territory. With lots of wing action, scolding and squawking, and divebombing, they were putting up a heck of a fight for the little nest so skillfully constructed from pine straw. There aren’t any eggs yet; hopefully the scuffle will be resolved and the sparrow will find a place to lodge under the M at McDonald’s or the A at Arby’s where he can fare just fine! P.S. Please view this photo in larger mode so you can better appreciate the delicate little balancing act as this female is standing on one leg, the other retracted and ready for flight as she divebombs the menacing sparrow!

drawing 1 for ‘inscriptions’ project. / A3 acrylics on collage, inscriptions in permanent marker and then drawn over with oil pastels. I started with a sketch, created the image digitally with special permission to use local photographer extraordinaries, Draqen and Draganin then used the digital image as a reference for the series. / The ball represents a language. its made up of markings that communicate that language by leaving them like a trail as it evolves. sometimes crossing over the trails of another language and picking up some of those elements. Like French words used in the English language or vise versa. The Inscriptions Series: / - The whole dyptich:

Louvre Pyramid is the large metal and glass pyramid which serves as the main entrance to the Musée du Louvre and has in the meantime become a landmark for the city of Paris. Commissioned by then French president François Mitterrand, it was built in 1989 by the architect I. M. Pei from New York, who was responsible for the design of the Miho Museum in Japan among others.
