  • The symbolism of this image is deep. Man against nature, his arrogance even when dwarfed by the age and strength of nature. / This was taken in Arches National Park at Delicate Arch in the Fall of 2005. There are many photographs of Delicate Arch and I didn’t want to duplicate what had already been done. With a man dressed in a black suit, he appears in a unique vision of the famed Delicate Arch stepping out from another time and place.

  • This is La Courtine, one of the most beautiful cliff I’ve ever seen. La Courtine is part of the amazing rocky coast around Etretat in Upper Normandy, France, altogether known as Les Failases d’Etretat. I took this picture last August, on a very windy – as usual over there – late afternoon. / I wanted to have the sea looking as much smooth as possible, but I was in full daylight, as it was around 19:30 hours. Even with the overcasted sky, and even full stopping down the lens, the exposure time was only 1/2 seconds, a too fast time to move the sea surface. Using a polarizer and a 8x ND filter I gained 5 more stops, obtaining therefore, with a slight over-exposure, 20 secs of exposure time. Finally, I used a graduated filter to darken the sky, while keeping a correct exposure on the cliffs and the sea. / This allowed me to give the sea surface a watercolour paint look, and I also obtained a slight movement in the clouds, thanks to the strong wind. I hope you enjoy it, thanks for dropping by. / Paolo

  • Seastorm off Bundeena Cliffs in Royal National Park just south of Sydney Australia. Taken using the brilliant Startrails Photoshop Action to blend 15 X 30sec identical exposures. You can download the Action from here: / http://www.schursastrophotography.com/software/photoshop/startrails.html If you view in Large mode you can see startrails between the clouds. Also the short horizontal light along the horizon is a fishing trawler. Funnily enough there was an average of only one lightning bolt per exposure. / I’ve now photographed 5 storms off these cliffs and the really curious thing I’ve noticed is that the lightning always seems to concentrate in the same places – here and about another 45 degrees to the right along the horizon. I know now that if I set my camera up here or at the other angle I’m always going to get the best lightning shots – weird or what? I would have thought the lightning strikes would be much more random than that.

  • Dance to the End of Time / Dance to the End of Time #2 Another one from the archives that I didn’t get around to posting. I shot this 3 years ago in winter under a full moon at about midnight at Lake Eucumbene in the Snowy Mountains, Australia. This was my first shoot outside at night in winter. It was minus 5 degrees and when I got back home and my fingers started to thaw out I couldn’t believe the pain – Lesson 1 for winter night shots – wear mittens at the very least! / These trees were drowned along with a whole valley to create a man-made lake as part of a hydro scheme in the 1950s. They resurfaced as a result of a drought we’d been having for the last few years courtesy of global warming. Canon 30D / Tv: 30 secs / Av: f/3.5 / ISO: 800
