This collection of Urban Landscapes is drawn from a larger body of work called Darkscapes. They are moody evocative invitations into mystery and imagination taken from the ordinary things that make up the fabric of city life. Beauty is all around us if only we take the time to notice it. We all look but maybe we don’t all see. This collection of images is a way for me to share what I see with others. Some years back I was short listed for a Sculpture commission at the new Green Square Railway station. I didn’t in the end win the commission but I did get to walk up the tunnels before any trains traveled though the station. This is one of the many photo’s I took. This is a companion image to the Urban Landscape#28 taken underneath Green Square station a couple of years ago before the trains started to use the lines. Walking up these tracks was a truly amazing experience.

Best viewed large. / Shot in a small stream in Royal National Park just south of Sydney Australia. / The blueness of this shot is a mystery to me. I’ve noticed that if you shoot moving water just after sunset it does tend to bring out the blue wavelength, especially if you use a polarising filter oddly enough. But I’ve never got this intensity of blue since. I made some adjustments to the curves and levels in PS to accentuate contrast a little but there is no colour manipulation to the water – this is how it came out! The only thing I can think of is that for some reason at that particular time and the particular angle I was taking this shot the auto colour balance in the camera was fooled into boosting the blue wavelength but this still doesn’t make much sense to me. Any other suggestions (short of radioactive material being poured in the water upstream lol)? I’ve actually got some even bluer than this but, quite frankly, they look so over the top it looks like I went nuts with PS so I haven’t posted them. / Shooting info as follows: / Tv 6 secs / Av f29 / ISO 200 / FL 70mm

Worth going to Larger for this one – heaps more stars. Storm off Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park. This shot has all my favourite elements in one image – the moon, stars, lightning, storm clouds, and ocean. What a treat this night was – getting some fantastic storms here. This is about the sixth I’ve photographed. There are two lightning cells here – the white one under the moon and the orange one off to the right of the main cloudbank. This is one shot in a continuous sequence of 100 I shot to create a startrails version. Unfortunately my computer is choking on processing that many 50mb files at once so may be delayed in posting the startrails version. BEST VIEWED LARGER This shot taken from MIlsons Point directly under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the lights and skyline of the city on the opposite shore. Taken around midnight the waters of Sydney are lit with colours of the rainbow. For visitors to Sydney , you can walk across to Milsons point, or catch train trip to Milson’s Point station. This shot was taken with no filters with a Nikon D300 and Nikon 18-200mm lens securely mounted on a Manfrotto Tripod, using three bracketed exposures which were then processed using Photomatix HDR Software. BEST VIEWED LARGER Avalon Beach is 3o kilometres from the Sydney CBD, it is part of the wonderful Northern Beaches in the area of PIttwater. FOr those visiting Sydney you can travel the Northern Beaches from Sydney by bus or car. Here you can enjoy surf beaches or the waters of Broken Bay. It’s my neighbourhood , cant think of a better place to watch the sunrise or set , a good chardonnay and fresh seafood. This shot was taken from 3 bracketted images processed by Photomatix.Equipment used Nikon D300 (It’s Magic)

This shot taken at sunrise was wonderful with reflections and light. / Newport can be reached by car or bus from the Sydney CBD, this is my neighbourhood No colour manupulation was used nor any filters, the hightened colours are the result of High Dynamic Range. Equipment: Nikon D300, Sigma 10-20mm lens, 5 Bracketted images .

Balmoral Beach / In the vicinity of Balmoral Beach are restaurants, beautiful houses and expensive yachts. It’s an ideal place for a quick swim and takeaway fish and chips at sunset. In fact, its the type of beach where you can take your rollerblades, dog, bike, sailboard and football, or just a picnic basket. The middle area of the beach is graced with a classic footbridge across the sand to a tree-covered outcrop. A section is protected by a shark net. Head to the northern tip of the beach where you’ll find a small, shady park behind an old club building. From here, a short walk through the streets or around the rocks will take you to Chinamans Beach. You can hire sailboards & Balmoral Boatshed offers tuition. Next to the boatshed are the swimming baths, enclosed by shark nets and a wide boardwalk. At Balmoral beach you can take a ferry from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo or Mosman Wharf and take the bus to the village of Mosman. Swim at Balmoral Beach, one of Sydney Harbour’s best, followed by fish and chips on the beach. Relax at The Spit waterfront recreation area with marinas, restaurants and canoe hire, or join a local kayak tour. Balmoral features Balmoral and Edwards Beaches, both of which are separated by the outcrop of Rocky Point. Both beaches are usually referred to as simply Balmoral. The locality has views across the entrance to Middle Harbour to North Head, Manly, and Clontarf. The harbour beaches face north east and is sheltered from ocean swell by Middle Head. The entire beach is listed on the Register of the National Estate as the ‘Balmoral Beach Conservation Area’.[2] The conservation area includes the promenade, the esplanade, the Rotunda and the Bathers’ Pavilion, which date back to the 1930s. A light mist this morning supplied me with this serendipidous shot. Not what I’d planned, but I do like what I was given!!! MUCH BETTER VIEWED LARGER / 190 Comments,125 Favourites, 2956 Views / Sydney is great for sunrises, it quite often receives spectacular sunrises as it greets the sunrises that appear from the east. This shot shows the city skyline as seen from North Sydney CBD on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour, in the foreground is Lavender Bay. Technique: HDR , 5 Bracketted images processed with Photomatix Pro with avery slight adjustment (sharpening & contrast) in Capture NX. Equipment: Nikon D300 , Nikon 18-200mm lens No filters or colour adjustment 1) RED SKY AT NIGHT… means that as the sun sets in the west, if it has a red hue or color to it, then the moisture was further west of their location. Thus SAILORS DELIGHT. A beautiful sunset. 2) RED SKY IN MORN…means that as the sunlight from the rising sun passes through moisture, it too will be red. This means that with the rotation of the earth, this will bring this moisture (and possible storm) right on top of them and it is only a few hours away. SO SAILORS TAKE WARN.” / I hope this bit of weather science helps.

A misty morning blended with an image by Marcus Ranum in CS3. The lady’s forlorn demeanor and “all dressed up with nowhere to go” image made me think of Karen Carpenter’s song “Looking for Love…” / Though people say love is everywhere, / I’m looking for love, but it’s just not there For those interested, the background image was processed, the figure placed (which automatically gives a second layer) and blended using the opacity slider, “blend if” options in the blending mode, and erase tool. A shadow was produced with the burn tool, and light controlled on the figure with dodge, burn, and a white brush at about 5%. The blur tool was also used around any hard edges to help the figure blend into the b/g and not appear sharp and ‘dropped in’. Most of these actions were done on separate layers in order to be able to switch them on and off individually and ensure the correct effect was achieved. It also prevents ruining the whole image – if something doesn’t work, just delete that particular layer!
