  • Most life-forms follow a prescribed set of instructions we call instinct. Mankind differs in using his imagination. He has a consuming passion for exploring his world and imagining what others could be like. We’ve taken our first tentative steps in venturing from Earth and put men on the Moon. We are now sending probes to find out as much as we can to our Solar system neighbours with the drive that some day we can go there too. We still have no proof that there is life elsewhere than here on Earth. Are we totally alone in the universe where there are untold billions of galaxies? For the moment we can only wait – and use our imagination. Space art had become very popular and many artist have shown us their ideas on what might be possible. i hope my paintings will be an acceptable contribution to the genre, albeit with a touch of humour here and there.

  • Winter in all it’s guises... Fresh-fallen snow, untouched by man, tops bushes fence and tree; / The strong, gusty wind, whirling it ‘round, improves and enriches its beauty. / It sauntered down in the silence of night, leaving a scenic delight; / Now, in the sun, it dances and winks as we drink in the woundrous sight. / This is a picture-post-card scene – winter at its best; / It leaves a mark etched in our heart of when winter was our guest. • Paintings of the Sussex Landscape by Lorus Maver

  • The Highlands and Islands of Scotland are depicted in Scott’s atmospheric and vibrant oils. / JAN: The Plane to Barra lands on the beach just beyond this croft. / FEB: This Sky study focuses on the effects of afterglow at sunset across the Western isles. / MAR: Crinan, Postcard picturesque harbour town located at the end of the Crinan Canal. My wife and I stayed at the Crinan Hotel owned by Scottish landscape artist Frances MacDonald. / APR: Looking West in the evening, cloud cover can become backlit and play tricks with perceived colour. / MAY: This place on the East coast of Barra allowed me a great opportunity to play with cool/warm colour contrasts and design-led mark making. / JUN: This loch (in the shape of the map of Scotland) I’ve painted many times. I pass it on trips to Skye and it looks different every time. / JUL: Sometimes what you want to say with colour can be restricted by reality for a representational painter… not here. This accurately depicts a recognisable landscape on Barra, while utilising many abstract elements. / AUG: When the horizon becomes unbroken all attention is focused on the forces of nature. / SEPT: The backlit effects of views out to sea from the West coast are in this case painted from memory. / OCT: Near the causeway from Barra (left) to Vatersay (right) this study captures a moment when the sun breaks out to strike the gulf stream waters which light up against the dark sky ahead. / NOV: Sometimes a literal depiction of a scene is the best way to highlight a postcard picturesque spot like this. / DEC: This describes the quality of evening light across the broken West Coast using contrasting translucent and opaque paint application.

  • This calendar shows a selection of recent paintings from Glasgow based landscape artist Scott Naismith. Scott uses vivid colours in a vigorous application to represent the fast changing light conditions of the West coast of Scotland. Colour use often becomes an entirely emotional response to the subject while tone can remain representational. The love he has for his native Scottish countryside is portayed in his work through an ebullient energy with which he handles the colour with pallette knife and brush.
