The Vigilant When no land was secure, this stone-made giants assured that the next day wouldn’t be made of captivity and suffering. Strategically placed, these strongholds were the ones who held a country’s name and honour during times of war. Fortunately we are in times of peace, and it’s amazing to step on the luxurious grass, and hear the wind while gazing such gorgeous castle. I can hear the church’s bells far away, a child laughter near, and the sound of the sheeps right in front of me. Yet… the sense of respect is omnipresent, and the scent of bravery still lives here… This is Castelo do Lindoso in the north of Portugal, on Serra do Gerês. José Ramos

Treviso is an attractive town in the Veneto region of north-east Italy, with a population of around 80,000. Rebuilt and restored after Second World War bombing, the town centre is a rambling maze of streets lined with arcaded walkways. Looking up, you’ll see fragments of the painted frescoes which once decorated Treviso’s houses. The town is circled by a town wall and by waterways. This shot was taken on our local beach at around 7:30am. I like this shot in particular because at this time of morning people all around the world pack into trains, cars, trams, buses etc and here is this girl and her horse reclaiming that little bit of freedom most of us crave.

Multnomah Falls, Oregon, USA, Taken Summer Vacation 2007 Multnomah Falls is a waterfall on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, located east of Troutdale, between Corbett and Dodson, along the Historic Columbia River Highway. The falls drops in two major steps, split into an upper falls of 542 feet (165 m) and a lower falls of 69 feet (21 m), with a gradual 9 foot (3 m) drop in elevation between the two, so the total height of the waterfall is conventionally given as 620 feet (189 m). Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the State of Oregon. / The Multnomah Creek Bridge on the Historic Columbia River Highway. / Colorized picture of the waterfall before the footbridge was addedUnderground springs from Larch Mountain are the year-round source of water for the waterfall, augmented by spring runoff from the mountain’s snowpack and rainwater during the other seasons. A foot trail leads to Benson Footbridge, a 45-foot (14 m)-long footbridge that allows visitors to cross 105 feet (32 m) above the lower cascade. The trail continues to a platform at the top of the upper falls, the Larch Mountain Lookout, where visitors get a bird’s-eye view of the Columbia Gorge and also of “Little Multnomah”, a small cascade slightly upstream from the “upper” falls, which is not visible from ground level. Geese returning to Alaska, framed against the Kenai mountain range across Cook Inlet. Signs and sounds of spring near our house, despite ice chunks in the inlet. Nikon D200 and a Nikkor 18-200mm at f/11 and 1/250 sec, -.3ev, using a circular polarizing filter. IS0 200. Converted from RAW to jpeg using Capture NX2. Light curve and slight crop. Sun sets about 9:45 p.m. these days, and we’re gaining light quickly. Featured in DSLR Users Only – 3 A Day – Thank you. That’s very encouraging! Whoopee! Sold a mounted print! Thank you! I feel so energized I could climb one of those mountains now! / Sandhill Cranes leaving for the winter, with the Kenai mountains covered by clouds / Sandhill Cranes catching a thermal over Cook Inlet before migrating south for the winter. /

This is the gentle glacier and melt water hills and valleys of Yorkshire outside the village of South Dalton. With the crop safely gathered in, the ghost trails of the plants form the track for the rolling runaway trains of the clouds above. Converted into a black and white pinhole. Best viewed large this was taken a few moments before this shot

We spent a weeks holiday in this area, and the weather was pretty poor most days, I had a hard time pulling anything good out of my Canon 40D !! / However, on the last morning, I woke early to a glimmer of light, and planned to shoot the early morning light falling on the Summer Isle. Of course, that didn’t work out, so feeling despondant, drove around the corner to turn around. / Glad I did, for less than five minutes, the light played ball ! / I knew I couldn’t shoot for a conventional shot, far too much contrast with those sunbeams, so I settled for a three – shot , hand-held, HDR image. There wasn’t time to set up the tripod, but I didn’t need it, since great depth of field was not required on this occasion. Luckily I had my IS ( image stabilisation ) lens already fitted ! The light rapidly disappeared under a big blanket of cloud, which remained with us in the North West for over a WEEK !! / It was however, a magical moment, filled with adrenaline ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, Canon 17-85mm f4.0-5.6 IS USM lens set at 79mm, 0EV, -2EV, +2EV, RAW, iso 100, cloudy wb, then processed in Photomatix, and further enhanced in Adobe Photoshop CS3, where I had to do some more selective Tone Mapping, in particular the moorland, where I wanted a little ‘pool’ of light. I also helped along the sunbeams with a subtle use of ‘dodging and burning’. / LAB colour was also employed, gently. The ‘warm up ’ photo filter was also used in Layers, and eradicated from areas not required by using Layer masks and painted out. / The result was what I had in my mind when I saw the scene, and could not be described as a true record of the scene before me. / This is the Digital Age, let us enjoy it, and use it to advantage !! We really don’t get much snow on the West Coast of Scotland, because of the influence of the Gulf Stream, and on the rare occasion it does fall, it is soon gone!! / Beinn Bhan is one of the peaks of the Applecross range, seen here from near Ardarroch, Loch Kishorn, on a gorgeous Winter’s afternoon. just as the sun was going down…at around 3.30pm !! Shot on my Canon EOS40D, tripod, polariser, f22, 1/10th sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in PS CS3, levels/curves/selective colour/hue and saturation. Taken in the North Yorkshire Dales, heading out of the village of Grinton and heading towards Redmire Moor. you climb up a nice gentle slope and then a few bends with wide open roads and hit an area that looks like it has been blasted by nature and man a few times and you came across some open views and then vistas like this one. The Russel Burn tumbles down from the mountains of Applecross, seen as you take the spectacular drive over the Bealach na Ba ( the Pass of the Cattle ) single track road. It is an old drover’s route, and rises to 2,053 feet, from where, on a clear day, you can see outstanding views of the Western Isles in all their glory. Mostly though, it will be so cold and windy that you will will not want to stay too long !! It is a very wild and remote area, so incredibly beautiful. Taken on a Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, / canon 17-85mm IS lens at 17mm. Polariser fitted, ( to slow the shutter for more blur) / f23, three shot hdr (-2EV , +2EV and 0EV …..from a minus 1 stop underexposure reading 0f f23, 1/15 sec. on Aperture priority ) iso 100, Auto wb, RAW files converted in Photomatix and Adobe CS3. / Finished with a little Orton. Suisinish is an abandoned village reached after a rough hour- long walk from Kilbride, near Torrin, Isle of Skye. / This old cottage is too modern to have been one of the dwellings where the folk were evicted to make way for the sheep, which were more profitable to the greedy landowners of the time. Many of the families were separated, and forced to emigrate to America, Canada, and Australia. / I cannot begin to feel their anguish. / There are many ruins scattered around the Brae (hillside), evidence of a thriving, close-knit community torn apart by human greed. Maybe this bulding was built early in the twentieth century, I have no idea and can find no information. / Back to the present….. / There was quite a wait for some usable light, a chilly fierce wind was blowing, rain was brewing, nothing new ! We sat in the shelter of one of those deserted ruins, eating a cheese piece, ( sandwich ) and a cheering cup of hot coffee from the thermos, reflecting on how ‘they’ lived then, compared to us nowadays, and watching the sheep that are now the only inhabitants of this beautiful place. / Rowan trees were planted in the belief they kept evil spirits away, and it is considered very bad luck to cut one down, even today ! This cottage is surrounded by them, I guess the magic didn’t work. A three shot HDR. CanonEOS 40D mounted on tripod, iso 100, auto wb, f22, RAW files converted in Photomatix, and touched up in Adobe CS3. / A little Orton also applied to ‘pop’ the texture of the stone. / A slight vignette added.
