Be thou the rainbow in the storms of life. The evening beam that smiles the clouds away, and tints tomorrow with prophetic ray. / / Lord Byron (1788-1824)
When you come right down to it, all you have is your self. Your self is a sun with a thousand rays in your belly. The rest is nothing. Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973)

This is Lake Gunn, on the way to Milford Sound, on the South Island of New Zealand. The lake is within the boundary of the Fiordland National Park, and is surrounded by native bush. It was summer and early morning when this shot was taken. This was taken with a Canon DSLR EOS 350D camera.
In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer. Albert Camus (1913 – 1960)
What is it that I love about the mountains? Is it the shape, the one I remember I used to draw as a kid, the grandeur on such a scale that easily outsize anything ever made by man, or just the special kind of atmosphere that always seems to linger around these giants. This is a striking mountain. I couldn’t stop looking at it, and just like with a beautiful women, you seem to notice a new set of attractive details with each pass your eyes make. The light was soft, the sun generous but the clouds were restrictive, creating deep, strong and wide shadows. At the end it didn’t matter, only giving the whole sight a rich, painting like quality. Enough talking. Indulging in beauty is a hard job, I know that better than anyone, and the moment is perfect for a rest-stop. The usual muffin and a flat white would give me enough strength to push the release button until the day expires, but where? That’s an easy one – the mountain house on the slopes of the volcano, where else.

Acrylic on canvas / This is quite a change for me. / Abstracted view across Otago harbour (New Zealand) during the winter, with tussock grass mounds in foreground and the Otago peninsula in the background. / This was a Masters Art Challenge, I had to paint in the style of an artist – Marilyn Webb. I used different media…acrylic instead of watercolour and chalk.pastel on paper. / Drybrush technique was used for the sky.
Lake Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand. Sunset. / I’ve lived in Rotorua for more than 18 years, this is the best sun set I’ve ever seen in Rotorua. Glad I was by the lake.
Mitre Peak, Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park South Island, New Zealand. Sunset. With the average rainfall being 182 days of the year, your lucky if you get a sunset at all. This is just another lucky day. Milford Sound runs 15 kilometres inland from the Tasman Sea and is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) or more on either side. Lush rain forests cling precariously to these cliffs, while seals, penguins, and dolphins frequent the waters. It’s magical place this. Very hard to leave.
