This collection of Urban Landscapes is drawn from a larger body of work called Darkscapes. They are moody evocative invitations into mystery and imagination taken from the ordinary things that make up the fabric of city life. Beauty is all around us if only we take the time to notice it. We all look but maybe we don’t all see. This collection of images is a way for me to share what I see with others. Some years back I was short listed for a Sculpture commission at the new Green Square Railway station. I didn’t in the end win the commission but I did get to walk up the tunnels before any trains traveled though the station. This is one of the many photo’s I took. This is a companion image to the Urban Landscape#28 taken underneath Green Square station a couple of years ago before the trains started to use the lines. Walking up these tracks was a truly amazing experience.

As part of a series. This image was shot using a / mamiya 220 camera (6X6 medium format) and iLford black and white roll film. The original is printed on Ilford Multigrade IV Fiber Based Paper and this is a scan from it. No editing.

The Henry Ross Lookout is on the Kennedy Highway (part of the Savannah Way), which cuts its way up the Macalister Range above Smithfield, a township in the Northern Beaches stretch north of Cairns, to Kuranda at the top of the range. The Kennedy Highway affords spectacular views of the low lying areas between the range and the ocean, and also takes one through lush rainforest areas. I took this exposure on a beautiful clear day. This oil painting was inspired by traveling in Portland, Oregon last Christmas during the worst white out in 40 years. The awesome quite and stillness of winter with it’s snow blanket drifitng in the breeze and the nightly shawdows on the water invites mystery and quiet contemplation.

The beautiful Isle of Skye. / Typical Scottish Highland weather, bursts of sunlight, lasting for three minutes if you are lucky, between heavy showers that soak you to the skin, lasting around five hours. Or more. LOL ! / You don’t have to be mad to live here, but it helps, as the saying goes ! A magic place all the same ! / Have you ever tried to set up a tripod where the heather and bog myrtle grow in abundance, teetering on the brink of a raging burn? (Burn = river) It ain’t easy ! / It causes you endless grief, for one thing, the blasted tripod wobbles around, and it disturbs those dear wee midges, which bite you to the brink of insanity, then you have a wee puppy craving attention threatening to knock the tripod/camera/you into the burn, and I can’t swim either. / Combined with Family members watching your attempts and laughing then getting bored, it is a small wonder that any images get produced at all. Professional ?? Ha Ha Ha Ha !! / Hysterical laughter ! Shot on my CANON EOS 40D, mounted, sort of, on my tripod, polarising filter, f22, 1/4 sec, 17-85mm IS Canon lens, at 22mm, iso100, auto wb, three shot RAW files processed in Photomatix, then fiddled around with in PS CS3, with some more selective tone mapping applied. LAB colour to finish. / Slight vignette. I was off to take some photographs of some waterfalls in the Breacon Beacons in Wales when I almost missed this scene. Had there not been a break in the cloud I may have missed it. It was probably the best drive by shooting photograph I have to date. I’ve had a little play in photoshop and thought I’d post the results. / The original was shot using a Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 27mm, f/8, 1/60 sec, ISO 400. No filters used and mounted on the car door. Taken in the North Yorkshire Dales, heading out of the village of Grinton and heading towards Redmire Moor. you climb up a nice gentle slope and then a few bends with wide open roads and hit an area that looks like it has been blasted by nature and man a few times and you came across some open views and then vistas like this one. The Russel Burn tumbles down from the mountains of Applecross, seen as you take the spectacular drive over the Bealach na Ba ( the Pass of the Cattle ) single track road. It is an old drover’s route, and rises to 2,053 feet, from where, on a clear day, you can see outstanding views of the Western Isles in all their glory. Mostly though, it will be so cold and windy that you will will not want to stay too long !! It is a very wild and remote area, so incredibly beautiful. Taken on a Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, / canon 17-85mm IS lens at 17mm. Polariser fitted, ( to slow the shutter for more blur) / f23, three shot hdr (-2EV , +2EV and 0EV …..from a minus 1 stop underexposure reading 0f f23, 1/15 sec. on Aperture priority ) iso 100, Auto wb, RAW files converted in Photomatix and Adobe CS3. / Finished with a little Orton. “Foggy morning- Child running down country road” I was lucky enough to capture this on my regular morning walk with my daughter. As a man and his 2 dogs approached us my daughter said” I hear puppies and started running up the road. This image was judged best of show at the “Professional Photographers of Oregon’s” Print competition. It stirred quite a discussion by the judges.
