Great Langdale is a valley in the Lake District National park in the county of Cumbria, in the northwest of England. It is often simply referred to as Langdale, the epithet Great distinguishing it from the neighbouring valley of Little Langdale. Harrison Stickle is a fell in the central part of the English Lake District, situated above Great Langdale. The fell is one of the three (although the number is debated) fells which make up the picturesque Langdale Pikes, the others being Pike of Stickle and Loft Crag. Together they make up one of the most picturesque, and probably the best known, mountain groups in the District. A “stickle” is a hill with a prominent rocky top.
. The Langdale valley contains 2 villages; Chapelstile and Elterwater and a hamlet at Highclose. This is a view taken from midway up Wrynoe pass which lies at the head of the valley
The Lake District, also known as The Lakes or Lakeland, is a rural area in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes and its mountains (or fells), and its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the Lake Poets. Buttermere is a lake in the north-west of the English Lake District. . There is a path around the lake which is about 4 ½ miles (7.2 km) long, and at one point runs through a rock tunnel beneath the locality of Hasness.
Durham Cathedral, in the city of Durham, England, was founded in AD 1093 and remains a centre for Christian worship today. It is generally regarded as one of the finest examples of a Norman cathedral and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The bishops of Durham were very powerful prince-bishops up to the mid-nineteenth century. The seat of Bishop of Durham is still the fourth most significant in the Church of England hierarchy, and he stands at the right hand of the monarch at coronations. Signposts for the modern day County Durham are nowadays subtitled “Land of the Prince Bishops.”
Lindisfarne Castle Lindisfarne Castle is a 16th-century castle located on Holy Island, near Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England, The castle is located in what was once the very volatile border area between England and Scotland. Not only did the English and Scots fight, but the area was frequently attacked by Vikings. The castle was built in 1550, around the time that Lindisfarne Priory went out of use, and stones from the priory were used as building material. It is very small by the usual standards, and was more of a fort. The castle sits on the highest point of the island, a whin stone hill called Beblowe.
In the eighteenth century the castle was occupied briefly by Jacobite rebels, but was quickly recaptured by soldiers from Berwick who imprisoned the rebels; they dug their way out and hid for nine days close to nearby Bamburgh Castle before making good their escape. In 1901, it became the property of Edward Hudson, a publishing magnate and the owner of Country Life magazine.
In the gardens of the Palace of Versailles in France, you can wander for days and never tire of the opulent beauty. This marble teahouse, situated on a pond next to a stone grotto, was a favorite entertainment place for Marie Antoinette and her court. Imagine chamber music rising up in the warm evening air, sheep grazing nearby, and food and laughter late into the night.

A night time shot of Shanghai’s famous waterfront.
I took this photograph on a cold December evening at sunset. During the winter the views are very clear and crisp. It is also easier than in summer to get more office lights because dusk is at around 4:30PM and most people are still at work.

Of ancient origin, it was once ruled over by the bishops of Luni. Its port was of great importance to travellers and pilgrims alike, who used to cross Sarzana in order to join the Via Francigena, heading towards Rome and the north of Italy. At Lerici, the Via Francigena forks off towards San Jacopo di Compostela. In Medieval times, the town belonged to Genova, passing briefly under Pisan rule before being reclaimed once again by Genova at the end of the 15th century. / The town’s medieval origins are still highly evident in its layout, which consists of tightly bunched houses lining narrow streets and alleyways. The town boasts a particularly interesting Jewish quarter, a castle built by the Pisans in the 8th century and later expanded by the Genevans, a museum of palaeontology and the piazzas of Poggio and of San Giorgio. The castle houses a 12th century chapel, dedicated to Santa Anastasia. A footpath that winds round the foot of the castle and along the Vassello seafront makes for a relaxing walk. The town also boasts the tower of San Rocco, which dates back to Roman times and which was turned into a bell tower in the 16th century, as well as the church of San Francesco d’Assisi, the public speaking house of San Bernardino, and the Palazzo Doria, which is located not far from the former medieval hospice dedicated to Santi Pietro and Paolo. / The Lerici region also encompasses the town of San Terenzo, home to Villa Magni, in which Percy Bysshe Shelley resided with his wife Mary, and Villa Marigola, which gives onto a glorious view of Venera Azzura beach. The town of Tellaro also falls under Lerici territory, and is a typical seaside town. The town boasts the ancient church of San Giorgio as well as the public speaking house of Santa Maria in Selaa. Villa Cochrane, located between Solaro and Pugliola and otherwise known as Villa Rezzola, is also worth a visit. Set in a park composed of eucalyptus plants, oak and heather, it is a veritable beauty spot. Other towns of interest are La Serra and Pozzuolo, located on a hill covered in olive groves; Senato, a tranquil and verdant oasis; and Solaro, a picturesque village facing out over the gulf.
