A bird sings out as the sun sets on an another day.
This is a digitally created image inspired by my recent attempts to photograph a similar scene. One night a few months ago, a bright, huge full moon was shining through the tree tops across the street over my neighbor’s house. Try as I might, I could not capture a satisfactory picture with my meager camera equipment. The image in my mind, however, would not go away, so I decided to create one. For the moon, I used a base stock photo as a model and drew my own dark and bright spots in photoshop, blurred the result, cut out the circle and pasted it onto a background that I had previously prepared by creating the haze that had so enchanted me the other night when I was trying to photograph it. The foreground is a composite of foliage cut from various pictures in my own photographic archives, all taken by me. The bird on the lamppost I shot during a walk on Friendship Trail Bridge one recent Sunday evening. I contemplated not adding him and his lamppost to this picture, but I have no other plans to use him and, hokey or not, I couldn’t resist putting him in, silhouetted against the bright full moon. It’s a cormorant, I think, and I have no idea if he would be found on a similar perch in the moonlight, but they have to sleep somewhere, right, so why not here. / /

Featured on October 13, 2008 in the group Digital Art Compilations I saw this technique on the front page (by Antanas) and thought I’d have a go at it, but came out with a different look by putting my own spin on it. I kinda like it. Comments welcome! Created in Photoshop. I used several layers of the same portrait as smart objects with different blend modes and grayscale masks. This will differ with each photo. The background is the bottom layer in B&W photo of a dock and seascape that I converted to RGB and I used “replace color” on it to get the bluish color.
It’s not often that I catch a sunrise. This is what I’ve been missing!! Saundersfoot Harbour, Pembrokeshire

A very old lamppost on Chicago’s Navy Pier. The birds came with it.
