My art is taking me places… but not fast enough so I have just decided to take up paid employment… but why am I so worried and why am I feeling like part of me is dying…? Thankfully the company I am joining is dynamic and fun… maybe it is just the bblues after having been self employed for past 30 months… And just when doors are opening I have to give up full time status so I can pay bills. Why do we artist have to suffer financially to become great? Not everyone can create good art , so I am told, if so then why do we have to suffer? Is it because Art is a take it or leave it commodity? Or we artists do not get in touch with the right people? There are exciting things happening for sure… I am just sorry it is being clouded by this feeling of sadness that I may have to give it up soon… at least partly. Okay probably time to do a Joyful dance and get the spirit up! / :) One things for sure, I am very happy Red Buble is now a Global site! Yahooooo! / Can’t wait to see what positive things will happen!

Today I finally came to the point where I must share my frustration with you. / The great bane in my internet life is very expensive and limited internet bandwidth. It forces me to do arithmetic as to how many Red Bubblers I can go visit each day and how long I have to wait before uploading an image. / In the past I could go and look at about 6 images a day and comment on them. Now I find a strange new trend among the RB’s. When I open an image, 2 , 3 or 4 other images open with it, usually previews of cards and prints that I could open myself should I wish to see it. Going to a persons profile (necessary if he isn’t on my watchlist) sometimes a lot of big images opens with the profile. / So, I only get to see one or two images instead of 5 or 6 as my bandwidth is used up by the duplicates etc. / I have learned to compensate, though. I sit with my finger on the stop button and press the moment I see duplicates opening. Then I comment on the fraction of image that is already open. But it is not really satisfactory. / I miss the days I could go browsing through Red Bubble and enjoying it like a walk in a forest. / Thank you for listening to my lament. I hope you have unlimited bandwidth and enjoying it to the full. You are very lucky.

I used to do a lot of collage, like for years. I haven’t done crap in quite a few years. I’d like to blame photoshop, and struggling with it on underpowered computers years ago, but its a poor craftsman who blames his one-eyed enabler—if anything it should have made it easier. Maybe some psychological deduction happened: the random “good fits” that came from disparate sources coalescing into a cohesive composition could only be synchronicity at work; as photoshop and clip art brought photographic juxtaposition more prominently into regular commercial work, the psychological aspect felt diminished. Having a box of clippings sorted into envelopes is a physical parallel to a the database table/folder metaphor on a computer, but the computer files having no “hand-feel” may have been part of the problem. Its also possible collage and me had run our course and we were done, over, time to move on. Before that I drew a lot of superhero/post-superhero comics and that went away too—how many times do I have to be dumped before I accept that its me, not them? At first I was hesitant to scan and upload old collages to redbubble, because of copyright issues, and not wanting to rehash. Keep in mind a few were printed in the usual alternative press mags in the 90s with no copyright hassles. One magazine did keep them off the cover, and only used inside. Whatever, if I can get the scanner to work I will upload a few. I bought new gear in order to do this sort of thing instead of just muse about it.

Eduard’s Lament Numbed to the world / He set aside his wish to become an artist / In order to take up what every one around him / Labelled a “normal” life He managed to get out of bed in the morning / He managed to make it to work / He managed to negotiate the living world / Safe in their own quiet desperate tranquilized hells He realized his dreams were a threat / And he saw a thousand people give up the fight / Fall into hopelessness despair grief Only numbed he could not give up / So he went inside instead / Inside to the places where most people do not dream / Let alone think of possibility. Written in response to the gift of a book given to me as a gift from one / heart to another without asking, a simple gift not expected. And B you are right / Life is short so I’d better start writing, as though I believe in it.
