ABOUT MY EXHIBITION The woks exhibited represent the linkup of two artists, a photographer and a sculptor. Such an attempt to blend two spheres of art is really innovative and a bit unexpected. There had been few who were successful in such an attempt. Both authors, blending their art by the means of the photo art, are the winners. Sculpture, as such, is rather a static art, sometimes “performing” in a specific, sometimes artificial, environment. However, the means of the plastic photography, seemingly, make the sculptures movable, dynamic; they make you feel the sculptures are moving. They become alive, start moving and react both to the environment and the views captured by the photographer. I would like the viewers also note the colour solutions of the photos, aimed at the strengthening of the overall impression of the imagery. The original blend and overlapping of two arts let see the impressive plastic metaphors, giving birth to various associations. CLICK PHOTO IF YOU WANT VIEW / / /

A little trip down memory lane and nostalgia. A childhood favourite I committed to memory aged 10. The Daffodils I wandered, lonely as a cloud / That floats on high o’er vales and hills / When all at once I saw a crowd / A host of golden daffodils. / Beside the lake, beneath the trees / Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine / And twinkle on the Milkyway / They stretched in never ending line / Along the margin of a bay. Ten thousand saw I, at a glance / Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced, / But they outdid the sparkling waves in glee / A poet could but not be gay / In such a jocund company. I gazed, and gazed, but little thought / What wealth the show to me had brought. For oft’ when on my couch i lie / In vacant or in pensive mood / They flash upon that inward eye / Which is the bliss of solitude. And then, my heart with pleasure fills / And dances with the daffodils. William Wordsworth

  • A week in 5DmkII heaven

I just got back today from a week down at Lake Tyers (near Lakes Entrance, Victoria) with my family, my first trip away with my 5DmkII. Where do I start, the experience of shooting with this tool was absolutely amazing and liberating, and the contrast from shooting film (Velvia 50 usually) could not be more pronounced. For a start it just does so much more feature wise. It took me a few days just to finish reading the manual and working out how everything worked. I’m still a little slow and clumsy and seem to accidentally reset half the parameters every five minutes but I’m getting there. Yesterday I went down Royal Cave at Buchan and was not permitted to take a tripod into the cave, I did anyway but there was only one spot that was big enough and we stopped in long enough for me to use it. Anyway I set the ISO to 6400 and aperture to f/2.8 on my lenses and basically from what I can tell on the LCD monitor everything worked hand-held without flash a result utterly inconceivable with my old setup. I’ve also never had much success with wildlife and birds. I either optimized for landscape or wildlife with landscape usually winning. Sometimes I’d take a 400 speed film but I found the changing film process so time consuming that by the time I did it my companions were either annoyed and or the wildlife had gone so eventually I stopped bothering. Now I just set the shutter to 1/250th, center weight the metering, let the camera decide ISO and motor drive away, something I never did with film due to the expense. Witnessed one of the most amazing sunsets on Monday night over a perfectly calm Lake Tyers (after dinner and putting the kids to bed). The reflections were amazing and the sky glorious. I bracketed everything, experimented with filters way more than usual and with the instant feedback worked out the best way to do it, even getting a number of great bird silhouettes against pink sky and lake in the process. On Wednesday (my family free adventure day) I traveled a few hundred kms through mountains and dirt roads to get to Erinundra plateau and after initial disappointment over a closed road, decided to do the walk anyway and hiked the 6km to get to the start of the off-track section (another 6km). First Creek Falls were apparently very popular a few years back after being featured on the cover of a guide book but from what I can tell seem to have reverted to a completely pristine state again due to the road closure (I found no sign of previous human presence whatsoever). On the arduous walk in I was very worried about how poorly my shots would work out due to the extreme light and shadow conditions caused by the cloudless blue skies but the weather completely closed in just as I got there giving the most glorious even light on the still pumping (due to recent heavy summer rains) First Creek Falls. I spent a few more adventurous hours exploring the precipitous gorge and falls below the main drop but unfortunately had to leave all too soon at 6:00pm so I could reach the road again in daylight hours. A huge day, as I got up at 5:30am and didn’t hit the sack until 1:30am but enormously satisfying and rejuvenating. In retrospect I am wrapped at the National Parks decision to increase the difficulty of access to this area as it seems to have preserved this delicate and wild area very successfully. For a few of my technical thoughts, the three programable custom setting on the dial C1, C2 & C3 are indispensable on this highly configerable camera (once I worked out how to use them), I just wish there was a C4, C5 & C6 as well. The most annoying thing I found with the camera was it’s inability to shoot three bracketed images off one shutter press in combination with a 2 second shutter delay (to eliminate body shake on my tripod). Am I the only one out there that does this? To me this is such a standard and obvious way to operate a camera that I am dumb founded that (as far as I can tell) it is not possible, having to press the shutter three times and waiting 2 seconds between each plus processing time just seems silly. If anyone else has worked it out please let me know. I would also love to see a five bracket option, i.e. 2 under, one on, 2 over for all those hard core HDR users out there. To my great surprise I completely filled my 16gig card and never got around to shooting off the last 5 frames on my film camera but wow what an amazingly liberating experience it is to finally be shooting with amazing glass on an amazing camera. Unfortunately my computer has a nasty virus on it at the moment and I will have to wait until it is re-imaged before I can download and consequently upload my shots so you can see whether all my talk has actually converted into anything worth while. I know all this stuff is probably no big deal to all you long term digital users but for me it has been an amazing week of photo heaven which has opened up the possibilities for photographic creativity enormously and I am very excited about this and the possibilities this brings to the future. Have a good one, will start posting soon. Trav

Have you noticed a general malaise here and everywhere? I think the economic situation has got us all a bit down, and it has affected us all whether or not one has lost their job or not. Art seems to get produced no matter what the climate is, but a recession certainly makes it harder to sell, and harder to make, as life gets filled up with the business of living. My good news is that the photo “Mono Lake” in my gallery now has 100 FAVES! The very first one of mine to reach that number.

In what a year that has had tremendous lows it was nice to receive my new (2nd hand) Subaru Forester XT last week. I owned a Liberty wagon before this car and have nothing but praise for Subaru and their cars, I haven’t stopped driving the new car since I got in on Wednesday. I took it up to Marysville and Lake Mountain on Saturday for a bit of a nice drive and took some pics along the way :) Enjoy On the side of the Lake Mountain Road: / A road that may or may not have been open to the public: Up the top of Lake Mountain:

Well I’ve finally done it … for so long I have been taking images of my beautiful Lake Macquarie – both the boats, sunsets and many moods of the lake. Now I have combined these images into a wonderful calendar. For those who don’t know, Lake Macquarie is situated in NSW Australia, about a 90 minute drive from Sydney along the F3 and sits adjacent to the City of Newcastle. The lake is actually situated in the city of its own name – the “City of Lake Macquarie” and is Australia’s best kept secret. / / Lake Macquarie is Australia’s largest coastal salt water lake, covering an area of 110 square kilometres (42.5 sq mi) in the Hunter Region of New South Wales and is said to be twice as large as Sydney Harbour and is the largest permanent salt water lake in the southern hemisphere. Living in and on Lake Macquarie has many advantages as the area offers not only the lake but is bounded on the eastern side by the ocean with a continuous line of beaches, the central coast towns and Sydney to the south, the Watagan Mountains to the west and Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley to the north and north west. So if you have already been here … drop by sometime … you will be pleasantly surprised. If you don’t … then I guess it will remain my best kept secret!
