  • It was a last minute decision to pop out before dinner and take a few shots. I had to do it as all day there were very limited photo opportunities. Boy was I glad that I popped out….a great scene greeted me….mirror like reflections and magical light…only if I didn’t deliberate for so long….. • Lakes Entrance, Victoria

  • Lakes entrance is a fishing port and tourist town located on the Southeastern coast of Victoria, Australia. It is near a natual channel which connects the Gippsland Lakes to Bass Straight. The town has been a popular holiday destination for generations of Victorians, yet has managed to retain its smalltown rural charm. Surfing on the nearby Ninety Mile Beach is a popular attraction, as is fishing from the many piers and bridges in the area. Family entertainment such as minigolf and the popular Shell Museum cater to all ages. This sunset was truly one of the most magnificent I’ve ever seen. Everyone in the town stopped to watch the spectacle and I shot many dozens of photos, trying to capture the glorious warm golden light that flooded the river. This is also my most successful attempt at a High Dynamic Range photo. I took three exposures at different settings to try and capture a broader range of detail in the highlights and shadows, and manually merged them together in photoshop.

  • A shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. Unfortunately a computer virus is giving me hell at the moment and it was re-imaged a few days ago and I’m waiting until next Monday to get CS4 installed so until then it’s jpeg’s straight from the camera (I’ll process the RAW’s next week). Yes it was an amazing night. I took a few of this exact shot at ISO 100 bracketed with long exposures but after these shots a bird flew into the frame and I grabbed 4 more as it flew across at 1600 ISO and very shallow depth of field but these turned out to be my fav’s (best viewed large to see the birdy).Only wish I remembered to take my old film camera to take a few Velvia shots to compare, but I forgot. I left after putting the kids to bed and at the time the light wasn’t looking in any way like it would shape up to anything special… Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70 f/2.8 USM @ 42mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 1600 / Shutter Speed: 1/250thsec / Aperture: f/2.8 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: -1/3rd / Post production: none For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

  • This photo was taken at the end of December 2008 during my trip to Victoria. Sunset at the beach at Lakes Entrance. Thank you for looking!

  • Took this shot of a juvenile Pacific Gull (Larus pacificus) at Red Bluff last week on a family holiday at Lake Tyers. Another shot that demonstrates the liberating power of my new 5DmkII as this sort of pic was difficult and expensive (on motor drive) for me to take with my old landscape optimized Velvia50 film set up. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM @ 300mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 200? / Shutter Speed: 1/250thsec / Aperture: f/13 / WB: Auto / Post production: jpeg, straightened, cropped and levels in Microsoft Office Picture Manager (yuk, I’ll redo it properly next week from the RAW in PS) Check out my Birds gallery for more avian delights. • Another shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. The light was amazing and now that I’m shooting digital I was experimenting more with filters and bracketing with my fav being this stop under with a full length 3 stop neutral density graduated filter. Now that I’ve shot a few frames to be honest I’m not seeing digital as a step up colour wise compared to my old Velvia shots with these sort of sunset shots (outside of the orange sunset it seems a bit colourless and grey too me). For waterfall, low light and wildlife it leaves Velvia for dead but I think Velvia will still have a place in my arsenal in certain situations. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70 f/2.8 USM @ 27mm / Filter: Cokin 121F, 3 stop full length neutral density graduated filter / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 1.3sec / Aperture: f/22 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: -1 stop / Post production: none For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

  • Another shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. This was my first sunset with the new toy and I had fun experimenting a bit more with my neutral density graduated filters to compare results. I shot the scene with 2 & 3 stop ND grads to see how they compared my fav being this 2 stop ND grad. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 24-70 f/2.8 USM @ 24mm / Filter: Cokin 121M, 2 stop neutral density graduated filter / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 0.6sec / Aperture: f/16 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: none For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

  • Another sunset shot from my January family holiday at Lake Tyers Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM @ 16mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 100 / Shutter Speed: 1/6th sec / Aperture: f/16 / WB: Auto / Exposure Compensation: -1.3 stops / When: 8:31pm on 5/1/09 For other shots from this area check out my Gippsland gallery. 10% of all profits go to the Wilderness Society

  • Buchan Caves Reserve / Near the township of Buchan, lies a honeycomb of caves full of spectacular limestone formations. Buchan Caves were formed by underground rivers cutting through limestone rock. The formations are created by rain water seeping through cracks and dissolving some of the limestone. As each droplet comes through the roof it deposits calcite which crystallises in a small ring. In time, stalactites are formed on the roof of the cave, and stalagmites build up from droplets which fall to the floor.
