  • Another rather sad and disturbing indication of the severity of the current drought that is ravaging the countryside and farms of Australia. Rusty Lakebed / Author: martin steinbrugger Many times life can seem like a thirsty barren land… / As though all our hopes and dreams, / Are little more than rusty grains of sand. Parched by disappointment time and time again… / Without hope life is but a severe drought, / That seems to have no end. Like clouds looming on the horizon withholding their rain… / So too, unless we let go of our past, / We can never be healed from all our pain. Apart from God we are as trees without water, / Destined too whither and die… / For God is the source of our eternal hope, / Through whom all life is meant to thrive! Inspired by Phil Thomson’s photo “Rusty Lakebed”

  • Featured in “National Parks of the World” – June 2009. Featured in “Rocks and Stones” – November 2009. Here in one of the hottest places on earth, large rocks appear to race one another around a dry lake bed leaving long trails behind them and small piles of dried mud in front of them. No one has seen them move but the evidence shows that they do…somehow. The practical theory is that the combination of seasonal heavy rains and very high speed winds can push these rocks, sometimes weighing as much as the average person, across the slippery muddy surface of the usually dry lake. On cold winter nights, sheets of ice probably also contribute to the movement of these “sailing stones.” [Wikipedia entry – Racetrack Playa] [U.S. National Park Service website] / Copyright © 2004 Brian W. Many times life can seem like a thristy barren land…

This is of course a direct result of Phil Thomson’s photo “Rusty Lakebed” I knew as soon as I saw it, there was a message to be gleaned from it. Thanks for the inspiration Phil.

  • I found this playa on a recent trip up to Sierra Nevada and i knew I would be back. This dry lakebed backs up against a cinder cone and in the far background the Sierras can be seen. It can be found near Fossil Falls in the Mojave Desert.

  • Shot at Shasta Lake just recently, October 18,2008…..during the drought…..This is how so much of our lovely Shasta Lake is looking and unfortunately the prediction is for a long drought….........Only time will reveal results such as this and only time and lots of rain can help…..Pray for RAIN! DAWN / So sweet and soft her footsteps in the dark of night; she so innocent, fragile and unaware of her untold plight. / She laughs out loud; eyes open wide, skipping to a tune only she can hear. / It seems strange, perhaps a little magical, that in her world of total darkness she has no fear. / She aimlessly strolls along, lost in her world of nightly visions and yet she is not alone; for in the darkness of night, a predator awaits. This marauder is cruel, vicious and capable of changing all fates. / The darkness seems comforting to her in her time of bliss, for “what you can’t see you often don’t miss”. / Though unknowing she may be, in the not so distant another can see that she is vulnerable, delicate as a new born fawn. / Time lingers there, anticipating her next move, eagerly trying to prelude dawn. / Dawn is the beginning of a new day, a new year, a new time, a new era; Dawn is the Beginning of Time or the End of Night; quite possibly in this case, dawn is the end of this fair maiden’s plight. / Feeling the warmth of her breath, the glimmer of distant lights in her eyes, the smell of her hair, Time closes in and awaits that one moment, that fleeting fraction of a second when caught off guard she is so totally unaware. / Night has ended and those precious moments are forever gone. / The predator Time has won; alas, it is now Dawn. / She awakens and looks in the mirror, face old, hair grayed, and skin taught and drawn. / She knows now that her battle with Time is lost; it is indeed a new DAWN. / By / Joyce Dickens / / / _____ / All The Materials Contained May Not Be Reproduced, Copied, Edited, Published, Transmitted Or Uploaded In Any Way Without My Permission. • Female figure in mind body immersion with cracked earth.

  • This photo was taken in the bed of Eco Pond in the Everglades National Park during the last week of the 2008-9 dry season. I love this shot because it’s everything you don’t think of when you conjure images of the Everglades.

  • I loved standing at Eco Pond in the Everglades National Park in the final week of the dry season and seeing the cracked earth juxtaposed with the forest and water.

  • On a grey, drizzly day at home I decided to drive 90 mins to the dry Lake Corangamite, hoping that the clouds would clear. / By some miracle, just as I arrived at the dry lakebed the clouds cleared and nature put on a magnificent show.

  • Much of the water in Washoe Lake has disappeared by the end of summer and as the waterline recedes, fish are stranded and die. Spotted this example while walking across the lake bed and was struck by its position against the sand and plant life.
