  • This is an oil painting I did the day of my wedding. It was a class I was taking and the instructor knew I was getting married that afternoon. So he had the class paint as fast as they could, he said it will come out better then spending a lot of time on it. Well, he was right! All the paintings in the class turned out so beautiful and it took us 2 hours and I was off at noon to get ready for my wedding. This was the happiest day of my life! We were married in the little church in the Garden of the Gods. The most beautiful place on the earth. When I brought my painting home my husband was amazed and loved the picture. To this day we cherish this picture the most. It was in July and the flowers were blooming and there in the back drop was Pikes Peak covered with snow. A day of beauty, with love in our hearts, no wonder this painting turned out so good. This original picture is not available for sale. You can also visit my website: www.RedfishArtwork.com

  • The headwaters of the Taggerty River starts in Melbourne’s closest ski resort, Lake Mountain. The closest town to Lake Mountain is called Marysville which is blessed with many nearby waterfalls, one of the most popular is the Taggerty River which has a circuit walk near it named after the Beeches which line part of the walk. I’m always amazed at the tenacity of life, how that fern can grow on that soiless rock in the middle of a river ??? amazing. I was up there a few weeks ago and got my slides back yesterday. I’ve been very impressed with my new 24-70mm f/2.8L lens, very fast and sharp but the surprise for me has been far more accurate colour. With my old lens (the mid range 24-80mm) the colour tended to shift to blue far more with these long exposures. • As some of you know.. my wife, Christine is very fond of one particular heron which lives at Sunset Lake in North Carolina. His given name is F.Scott Heron and there is an interesting story behind how he got his name.. Years ago at a party, my wife along with another neighbor, made up a story about this heron. They decided to name him F.Scott Heron. He is said to have the spirit of a man that once owned a local eatery F.Scott’s. A man of few words, he smiled at his patrons and went about his business. It is thought that he haunted the old building after his death until it was torn down. After which he took on the form of the heron. There is no truth to this~ but it was fun to give the bird a “story that explained his attitude.” My wife is still trying to capture this bird in full flight, flying into a sunset. One day she will get him!

Not long ago, mankind nearly destroyed this land with warfare. But nature has found an ingenious way to rejuvenate this land, almost as if by miracle. This Eden is Plitvice Lakes National Park, the oldest national park in Europe, located in Croatia’s Dinaric Mountains. Plundered during the Balkan War in the early 1990’s, Plitvice owes its new existence to a type of limestone called travertine, which has the ability to grow quickly and continuously, creating new pools and barriers, water slides, and cascades. There are 16 falling lakes arranged in breathtaking terraces, connected by countless waterfalls and rapids. Underneath the Dinaric Mountains, rainwater gathers and rushes through subterranean caverns, drawing lime from the stone. Here, stalactites hang and species dwell that are so rare and strange they defy the imagination.

In the mountains of Croatia, a kind of alchemy is forging a magical landscape where water literally turns to stone.THE FALLING LAKES gives viewers a first-hand look at this remarkable process, which has helped make Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes National Park one of southeastern Europe’s natural wonders. / The park’s crown jewels are a necklace of 16 lakes connected by gushing springs, sparkling rivers, and soaring waterfalls. The water streams over porous limestone that underlies the region. But the landscape is far from rock solid. It is constantly changing its shape, as erosion and an unusual chemical process continually form new dams and riverbeds that steer the water in new directions. Here is how it works As water travels through the limestone, it dissolves the surrounding stone and bubbles to the surface heavily laden with suspended lime (calcium carbonate). The water then flows through a natural filter of moss and plants that grow in a luxurious carpet along stream banks. Under the right conditions - water and air temperatures play a key role - the suspended lime is deposited on the plants, entombing them in a hard glaze. Eventually, the lime-encrusted plants petrify, and the entire mass turns to a rock that geologists call travertine. Even small animals can become entrapped in the “living” stone. Then, new mosses grow atop the travertine and the process begins again. / Over thousands of years, the waters of Plitvice have built everything from sturdy dams to weird and wonderful natural sculptures. But researchers have discovered that the conditions have not always been right to create travertine. Several times over the last 30,000 years the region has lacked the right combination of temperature and humidity to form travertine. These days, however, the travertine-forming process is going strong, forming new layers at rates of up to an inch a year. But the process depends on clean water, and pollution from farm fertilizers and other sources threatens to slow or stop the process in some parts of Plitvice. Local groups are working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen. In the meantime, visitors throng to the valley, eager to see for themselves the magical water that can turn to stone. One visitor says that even Medusa - the mythical snake-haired creature who could turn onlookers to stone - would be amazed by the waters of Plitvice. Nikon D300 Nikon 12/24
