The day dawned bright and beautiful with the gentle breeze dancing on the ripples of the lake. The lake, not too big by Canadian standards, lapping the ‘cut-very-nicely-by Ali-grass’ at the bottom of the garden, is just spitting distance (If you are a good spitter like Ali, my son-in-law) from the verandah. I made the monumental and very brave decision to go for a swim. Brave as I am alergic to cold water, and alergic to exercise.Double allergy conditions. Last year when I was here I made the decision too late in the holiday. I regretted not doing so earlier as the water was a fabulous temperature, the water pristine and crystal clear and I enjoyed it so much that I vowed that on our return I would swim everyday. So with courage duley plucked up, I donned my swimsuit and swim shoes (fancy new foot atire for swimming that we never ever wore in Africa) and gingerly I entered the water off the ladder of the dock. With the usual gasps and whoops I slowly stepped down the ladder until the moment came when I launched right in. Then with determination I set off at a gentle breastroke across the lake, right knee, creaking with arthritis twinges, moaning all the way. The nearest shoreline across the lake my destination, about two hundred meters, firmly in my sights. The artist in me revelled in wonder at the colour of the sky, the patterns of the reflections in the water, the seagull sitting on the floating dock watch me, with what I swear was a smirk of amusement. I could not help but drink in the wonder of it all. The water felt like silk, the breeze was so gentle. Floating on my back, looking up at the clouds,my heart full of joy and praise. And then it happened. I was kissed. God kisses happen when you least expect them. But you know they are just for you. A gift, an encounter, a special moment. As I was gently stroking the water in wide breaststokes, up popped, right in front of me and not five meters away, a loon, Canada’s national bird. He had the most wonderful markings in black and white, with long pointed beak. He proceeded to seranade me in a haunting bubbling song, punctuated by dipping his head in the water. I was entranced and watched with awe as this performance was enacted again and again until he had swum right around me. Then he dived and was gone. Oh wow. What a smooch! It happened three times. Does God love me or what? I know the loon was probably being territorial and just warning me off his territory. But to me it was an encounter that was filled with magic and it will stay with me as one of those precious gifts from a God who knows just how to romance me.
