The little stone bridge over the stream at the bottom of Aira Force in Cumbria’s Lake District.

The green heron is a solitary bird that fishes with intensity in lakes, ponds, and streams. I took this shot when it was fluffing up its feathers, something I haven’t seen these birds do very often. When it’s fishing, the green heron concentrates so intently that it doesn’t seem bothered by the likes of photographers with big lenses in its face; that’s another reason I like these birds so much—their tolerance.

I love the delicacy in the design of these arched stone bridges, belying the builder’s absolute faith in the integrity and strength of a stone arch.
