pastels I always thought it was kind of weird how things tended to get named after Icarus and Daedulas got left out a lot. I mean, he was the guy who built the damned wings, after all. The sea where Icarus fell is even called the Icarian. / Daeduls did some other cool stuff to, though some of it is pretty damned weird. His statues were so lifelike they had to be chained down to stop them from running away. He built the palace of the king Minos, sure yeah, palace architect, that’s cool, but: well Poseidon sent a white bull out of the ocean to show how Minos was entitled to rule Crete. He didn’t want to sacrifice the nice shiny bull, which really pissed Poseidon off, so he cursed Minos’ wife, Pasiphae, to fancy the hell out of the bull. I mean sexually. She wanted some bull lovin’. This led her to get Daedalus to make her a FAKE COW to clime into so she could root the bull. Which she did. / Then she gave birth to the Minotaur. Daedalus built the labyrinth for it to hang out in and they fed it with seven boys and seven girls every year. One might think it would have been vegetarian. Theseus came along and killed it, anyway. / Daedalus and Icarus were imprisoned by Minos (for revealing the secret to the labyrinth, one would think he would be more annoyed at the fake cow thing) and it was then that he built the wings and flew away which we have all wanted to do when stuck at someon’e house who is watching reality tv. I think this line is from Chatterton, an 18thc poet who suicided at 18: “GIVE US WINGS WINGS WINGS! THOUGH WE PLUNGE INTO THE SEA!”
The labyrinth was a maze created by the brilliant engineer Daedalus for King Minos to hold prisoners from ever escaping. The Minotaur resided deep within it’s depths, later to be slain by the hero Theseus. Of course Daedalus himself later became a captive to his own creation. Since even he could not find a way to escape from his own construction, he devised wings of wax and feathers and string, and, along with his son, Icharus, flew from the confines of the labyrinth. Icharus, not heeding his father’s warning, flew on too high toward the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt; and he fell to the earth, and his death. / The labyrinth has been observed in many cultures to be a metaphor of the depths of the human psyche. From the ideas of old Greece to medieval cathedrals to the modern ideas of the psychoanylist Carl Jung, the labyrinthean depths of our own minds may very well be of the very highest construction and capability, as well as our greatest obstacle toward true enlightenment and freedom. / Original work was created using watercolor and gouache media on Arches cold-press 180lb. cotton rag.

This image depicts the union of man and woman in an eternal love knot spiralling up out of a pool, within which can be seen the ancient 7 circuit labyrinth that in ancient times, represented the fertility of woman. The image also forms the shape of an arched window giving the impression of a spiritual icon. All of my artworks are created from handmade papers and organic materials from the rainforests of NSW, Australia. In this image, the detail of the actual air ferns and mosses used in the original can be clearly seen.

The walk to get here is pretty tough, it’s 1.5 hours to get to the Labyrinth and it’s mosty about 45 degree climbing in some parts steeper and when raining hard makes for little fun. I waited for about 20 mins for the rain to stop and the cloud pass to show the Mountain, when it did i got this shot off, then a nasty front came straight over and heavy rain forced me to leave. So 3 hours walking for one shot. The Labyrinth is spectacular, but very easy to get lost, someone came in here a year ago and was never seen again, as always such places need to be respected for the danger that is always apparent. Anyone planning on a trip to the mountains in Tas even in Summer should know that weather can change in a second and you can be caught in a snow storm. But it is such a magic place and should be seen by anyone that loves the outdoors…..and cold!

If I had to pick one image as my favorite all time shot it would be Peter Dombrovskis’ Mount Geryon from The Labyrinth. To me it is quite simply the most inspiring example of everything a fantastic landscape photograph should be . An amazingly interesting, colourful and sharp vegetated foreground (perfectly executed with the tilt feature of his large format 4”x5” Linhof technorama camera), the most perfect reflection I’ve ever seen, great middle ground topped off by the amazing profile of Mt Geryon accentuated by a sprinkling of snow. The combination of these elements creates a beauty so perfect that it almost defies belief. Back in 1998 when I last did the Overland Track – Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair walk in winter I did a flying visit to the labyrinth on my last day before walking back to Coles Bay completing most of the St Clair leg by torch light in the short winter days. Unfortunately due to inclement weather visibility was only about 10 to 100m at best and I didn’t really see anything. The next day on the way home on the boat across Bass Strait I bought the above poster feeding my dreams of returning till now. In a way history repeated this week when I finally returned, it had been snowing all night on us down in the valley at Pine Hut and as we climbed steeply up to the plateau the world was transformed into a winter wonderland. The cloud cover was again thick and visibility was again low but donning my pack I at least was equipped to stay a few nights. Leaving my companions to return to the comfort of the hut after lunch I continued alone to Lake Elysia. Walking over the final rise and seeing the lake and surrounding hills was in many ways a return to a place long held dear such was my familiarity with the numerous photographs I have of the area. It was very cold and I half expected that I would have such cold hands after setting up my tent that I would probably remained tent bound for a while afterwards to warm up but everything was in an acceptable comfort range so I wandered around the shore of the lake umbrella in hand taking shots. One hand was in a wet glove for carrying my cold metal tripod the other one bare so I could handle my camera without getting it wet and despite frequent snow flurries I spent an enjoyable few hours exploring some of the more intimate aspects of the shore line this shot being taken in an ever so brief moment when the cloud cover lifted enough to at least see the bases of Mt Geryon and The Acropolis. That night it bucketed down with rain and by morning every last skerrick of snow had been washed away. As luck would have it my tent site was transformed into a very wet puddle and with my tent floor leaking badly everything ended up in various degrees of wetness. I had the food to stay another night but with everything including my sleeping bag and a very expensive 15mm fisheye lens being wet my dreams of an open sky sunset and sunrise at Lake Elysia had to wait till another time. / wrote this beautiful poem: / / When your day is dark / and your path is all broken / I want to gather up your pieces / and build a dream for you / unfold your hurt, undo the creases When your shoulders are heavy / with tomorrows you can’t seem to find / I want to show you the sky / so that hope could encase you / and give you wings to fly When all direction is lost / and the road disolves in mist / I will search and find a way / to bring you gently back home / to a place where you may lay… in peace

Labyrinths have always had a magical and slightly daunting effect on me. Possibly influenced by the David Bowie / Jennifer Connelly 80s movie. Walking around in the walls of a labyrinth, you have lost all your friends, but can still hear them in the distance, somewhere. Not sure where you are or where you are going, you stumble across an open area, an old forest. You see a makeshift burrow, made out of old stones, looks like it’s been there for hundreds of years. As you get closer, you hear soft whimpering coming from within. As you get to the old wooden door, you can clearly hear a child crying inside. That’s when you hear the growling behind you… Taken in Prague, along an old overgrown path, on the way to the hill that overlooks the whole city. I clearly remember looking at this and having a small shiver. / The labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness, it combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. It represents a journey to our own centre and back out again. We can have a direct experience with a labyrinth and they are often used during meditation and prayer. Walking through a labyrinth awakens our senses and also acts as a rebirthing centre and seen as the Great Goddess’ womb and we are cleansed by the experience. You may notice my picture is encased within a uterus shape to represent this. They reveal the presence of a cosmic order and universal consciousness, this labyrinth I have drawn here and then expanded on in a polar pattern is called a 7-Fold Cretan Labyrinth and the oldest known labyrinth found around the world in ancient sites and sacred areas known to have been drawn at least 4000BC. This same labyrinth can be found on coins from Knossos, Crete 10BC. Crete is home to the most famous labyrinth myth, that of the Greek hero Theseus and his slaying of the Minotaur after he enters King Minos’ Labyrinth and with the help of Ariadne’s ball of wool finds his way out again, sails back to Greece and becomes and Athenian hero. Most labyrinths, particularly ancient and religious ones, a good one is at Chartres in France, contain non-verbal, geometric and numerical symbols or prompts that create the sacred geometry. These are meant to represent a cosmic order as they interface the material world with the realms of higher consciousness…. Labyrinth is a word of Pelasgian, which is pre-Greek, origin and oddly enough comes about from labrys, a word for the Archaic “double axe”, with inthos “place” (as in “Corinth”). The complex palace of Knossos in Crete is usually implicated, though the actual dancing-ground, depicted in patterns at Knossos, has not been found. Something was being shown to visitors as a labyrinth at Knossos in the 1st century AD. Greek mythology did not recall, however, that in Crete there was a Lady who presided over the Labyrinth. A tablet inscribed in Linear B found at Knossos records a gift “to all the gods honey; to the mistress of the labyrinth honey.” All the gods together receive as much honey as the Mistress of the Labyrinth alone. Much of this info can be accessed at Crystalinks You can also learn how to draw one at that site, which can be tricky at first but flow out when you master it and is great for the soul. / This is a graphite hand drawn Cretan labyrinth, put into Polarise then printed out and coloured in by hand with colouring pencil, my favourite art medium. / / This one is my original drawing without added colour, which is also available but not listed. / / Check out Dark Labyrinth
