  • This is La Courtine, one of the most beautiful cliff I’ve ever seen. La Courtine is part of the amazing rocky coast around Etretat in Upper Normandy, France, altogether known as Les Failases d’Etretat. I took this picture last August, on a very windy – as usual over there – late afternoon. / I wanted to have the sea looking as much smooth as possible, but I was in full daylight, as it was around 19:30 hours. Even with the overcasted sky, and even full stopping down the lens, the exposure time was only 1/2 seconds, a too fast time to move the sea surface. Using a polarizer and a 8x ND filter I gained 5 more stops, obtaining therefore, with a slight over-exposure, 20 secs of exposure time. Finally, I used a graduated filter to darken the sky, while keeping a correct exposure on the cliffs and the sea. / This allowed me to give the sea surface a watercolour paint look, and I also obtained a slight movement in the clouds, thanks to the strong wind. I hope you enjoy it, thanks for dropping by. / Paolo

  • Ponte della Croce on La Giudecca, one of the major Islands of Venice, Italy. This bridge used to be called Ponte della Zirada (of the turn), because in the regattas the boats rounded a post placed opposite to it. Single RAW image Tonemapped in Photomatix Pro 3.2. • Designed by Andrea Palladio, Chiesa del Redentore (Basilica of the Most Holy Redeemer), better known simply as Il Redentore (Church of the Redeemer), is located on La Giudecca, one of the major Islands of Venice, Italy. Inside are works by Domenico Tintoretto, Veronese, Palma il Giovane, Francesco Bassano, Alvise Vivarini and Pietro della Vecchia. A festival and the church owe their origin to an epidemic of plague in 1576. At that time the Senate vowed to build the church and to celebrate the Feast of the Redemption; the Franciscans undertook the religious obligations. The building of the church began in 1577 and was completed in 1592. After the dedication of the church the Doge came every year with the chief officials of the state to a thanksgiving service. The Venetians still make a pilgrimage here on the Feast of the Redemption (3rd Sunday in July) to thank the Saviour for the end of the epidemic. A bridge of boats is constructed from Zattere across the Giudecca Canal, over which the procession makes its way to the Church of the Redeemer. In the evening the festival concludes with a magnificent fireworks display and a procession of illuminated boats. Single RAW image Tonemapped in Photomatix Pro 3.2. Camera: Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi in the USA) / Sigma 18-200mm lens / Exif data from the JPG / F-stop f/5 / ISO 200 / Focal length 59 mm BEST VIEWED LARGER Related shots can be found at: Venice or Italy. • La Salle is just off HWY 16 about 30 miles west of McBride BC in the Robson Valley. I grew up just a few miles from this spot. The Mountain in the background is nick named Hammer Mountain because Many years ago, I think before I was born, a forest fire left a scar in the shape of a hammer head just below tree line and below and to left of the highest peak. View large and see if you can spot it. / I took this photo over 20 years ago with my Canon AE-1 Program film camera. Captured on Kodak 100asa film.
