  Sukurajima is an active volcano in the south of Japan near the city of Kagoshima. While it was not active when we were there it has been active in recent years – last erupting in February 2000. Best placed of a black background.

  Nikon D300 / In the Beppu Sanctuary of Takasakiyama, Japan stands a hill with 700 monkeys on it. There’s the baby group, the kindergarten group and the adult groups. / I arrived on a Wednesday to be told that the rarest sight to be photographed is the 3 day old baby. The mother was hiding him from everyone. Suddenly on day 3 she was allowing humans to get pretty close to her and the baby without being scared. The guide alerted me to her presence and I quickly got this shot :o)

  Road To Mount Aso

  Mount Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is among the largest in the world. It stands in Kumamoto Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. Its peak is 1592 m above sea level. Its caldera is 25 km across north to south and 18 km across east to west. The caldera has a circumference of around 120 km (75 miles), although sources vary on the exact distance. Kumamoto Prefecture is located in the center of Kyushu, the southernmost of the four major Japanese islands. It is bordered by the Ariake inland sea and the Amakusa archipelago to the west, Fukuoka Prefecture and Oita Prefecture to the north, Miyazaki Prefecture to the east, and Kagoshima Prefecture to the south.
