  • Every year, on the day after Thanksgiving, my home town of Louisville, KY (USA) undergoes a change in scenery… months prior to this celebratory day, city workers busy themselves with installing thousands of lights all throughout downtown so that, during the ceremony held on this day, called “Light Up Louisville” the mayor designates one of the local citizens to flip a switch that lights up the entire city aglow with Holiday lights… This is my version… a photograph taken at night of the city the day after Christmas, once Louisville has been lit up for the duration of it’s purpose… with a little help from Photoshop, of course…

  • The old Green Mill, which was built in 1823, was operated by the Green Family for over 140 years. It was part of a 6,000 acre farm and timber complex that supported several family owned businesses. Farmers from surrounding counties would come to the town with grain for milling into flour and cornmeal. Willis Green, a War of 1812 veteran and oldest in his family, bought the land in 1821. Thereafter, beginning construction on the house, now the Green Farm Mansion. Willis’ nephew Lafayette Green expanded the operation with the addition of a General Store and second sawmill. Lafayette married Eleanor Scott of Frankfort and together had four children: Willis, Preston, Robert and Jenny. The third generation Willis Green oversaw the operation of the Green Family Farm until his death in the mid 1940’s. His sister Jennie, the last direct descendant, lived prominently until her passing in 1965. / Even though the old mill looks like it is about ready to fall, take heart, The restoration has just begun, so maybe it will be here in Ky. for many generations to come.

Straight ahead are the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky. Just below is the famous Cumberland Gap. / Cumberland Gap is located at the juncture of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. Important in American history for being the passageway through the Appalachians used by pioneers moving west, it was called the Wilderness Road, and it is now part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. / The Cumberland Gap was discovered in 1750 by Dr. Thomas Walker, a Virginia physician and explorer. Long used by Native Americans, the path was widened by a team of loggers led by Daniel Boone, making it accessible to pioneers, who used it to journey into the western frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee. Between 1775 and 1810 as many as 300,000 settlers may have used the Gap. [ref. Wikipedia] Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm, F/7.1, 1/125 sec, ISO 100, totally unedited.
