Kurrajong Trees are an important source of bush medicine for Indigenous Australians. Acrylic on Canvas Board / 400 mm x 500 mm
Okay then well for all of those who have seen my other dandelion shots from a recent series, you will know that this is the same shot used in Breaking Through.. This shot is the original, full-colour version and I have decided to upload it as my girlfriend insists that she likes it better than the sepia toned version, so I thought I’d give it a go.. / I hope you like it and please let me know what you think, comments are more than welcome!
I was driving along side some of the many paddocks that frequent my area (the Hawkesbury area) when I came across this cow, the light seemed to be pretty decent and seeing as how the cow was a few metres away I decided it would be a good opportunity to test out my new 55-200mm lens.. / The cow just would not look at me (unusual for a cow) and then finally it decided to sneak a glance so I snapped the shutter and this was the result.. / Post processing involved adjusting the exposure, contrast and levels, and then applying a vignette and a monochrome filter. / I havent uploaded anything for quite some time so I decided to throw this image to the wind and see if it flies or crashes and burns.. / As per usual comments and critiquing are more than welcome, and thanks very much for taking a look! Kurrajong Trees are an important source of Bush Medicine for Australian Indigenous people. The second work in this series, The first can be viewed here I’m astounded at the popularity of these works…. I’m often asked to explain the gold swirls… they represent the burning embers that are carried in the wind generated by the fire. Acrylic and pen on Artists board / 500mm x 400mm / Sydney 2009

Panorama Point, Kurrajong Heights NSW. Just off the Bell’s Line of Road you will find another road that leads further up the mountain, this was the original path over the mountain to Lithgow before the current road was built through Cut Rock. At the top of the hill, known as Warks Hill, there is a left hand turn into Burralow Road and this property once stood proud along this road, 40 acres on the top of the mountain. There was a trig station positioned there and is still there today. The old pine trees on the property were planted sometime in about 1930 by Charles Hobbs who turned this spot into a picnic area (often known as the NRMA Picnic Ground). He charged entry to the land, a penny a walker and sixpence a car. He sold hot water, cordial and fresh scones and jam. Charles and his wife Linda sold the property in the 1950s and for awhile it was known as Cherry Park and some of the old cherry trees still survive. After that it went into ruin and the story written by me in my “Writing” section tells it all. /

I nestled myself in amongst the pine needles that covered the ground beneath the amazing old pine trees ….
An ode to my grandparents old property at Kurrajong Heights. I keep being drawn back there at least a couple of times a year to sit and remember my past and to feel the presence of those who have been before me. /

My poem “Whispers” was featured in Stillness Speaks – I wrote this poem in 2005 to commemorate my memories of Kurrajong Heights and the magnificent trees that my grandfather planted almost 80 years ago. I have since also written another short story on similar lines “Panorama Point at Kurrajong Heights NSW” – this is the photo today of the trees that will one day soon disappear as age and development will inevitably kill them.

Gadzooks! this is a lovely surprise. I opened MyBubble this morning as I sipped my coffee and found someone called / ‘featured’ has added Kurrajong Tree & The Approaching Bushfire to their favourites. I thought that was an odd RB nom so I had a peek at their profile… and there looming large on the featured wall and greeting cards gallery is my little painting. I’m not one for false modesty, but I never rated any of my work as anything someone else might like… I paint, draw, write, photograph for my own amusement, always insprired by my muse. So, Kim, my beautiful muse whose love of the Australian bush I share, I dedicate the Kurrajong Tree & The Approaching Bushfire to you.
