Kurnell has a number of marshes, this is one of them.. taken just before sunrise.
Sunrise enters the new day greeted by the waters
This collection of Urban Landscapes is drawn from a larger body of work called Darkscapes. They are moody evocative invitations into mystery and imagination taken from the ordinary things that make up the fabric of city life. Beauty is all around us if only we take the time to notice it. We all look but maybe we don’t all see. This collection of images is a way for me to share what I see with others. Just outside the city of Sydney down by the end of the airport is the amazing conglomeration of Port Botany and Kurnell. The dense and complex arrangements of tanks and containers in this heavy industry location have long facinated my with there paradoxical combination of danger and beauty. This particular perspective is long gone as the sight has been buildt up heavily over the last couple of years. This shot always looked to me like as sort of theatre set with its graceful arrangement of huge tanks containing all sorts of gas and oll and god knows what else. . /
Kurnell was once a beautiful beach side suburb in southern Sydney, over the years this area has been used as a site for sand mining, a water treatment plant, oil refinery and now is the new site for sydney’s desalanation plant. This photograph was taken at an infamous surf spot at Kurnell where in the natural rock formation lives tall smoke stacks and pipelines excreting the oil refinery’s waste into the air and ocean.
I wasn’t sure about uploading this one but I decided to because this was the easiest infrared picture I have ever processed. I channel swapped the colours and that is all….I haven’t done anything else to it. Normally I have to play with levels and heaps of other stuff to get the blues right and the white actually white, but for some reason this one didn’t need any adjusting at all…not sure why. Here are the camera details in case you’re curious… Camera: FujiFilm FinePix S7000 / Date: 16-02-2008 @ 11:46AM / Location: Kurnell – just around the corner from where Captain Cook landed. ISO200 / f/8 / 2.5sec exposure / R72 filter / Tripod

Caltex Refinery at night. A place of industrial beauty.
Being built in Sydney, waste of money imo, they could’ve used the money to make every person in Sydeny install a water tank.
Another B&W composition.

This is a panoramic image of Cape Solander, Kurnell. / In the background you can see an oil rig platform that is used to construct the controversial Desalination Plant in Kurnell. Usually an Eyesore, but I think here the light works for the photo. Again I used PTGUI to stich the images together and then did some minor adjustments in Lightroom. alexkess.com
