  • Cobblers Beach, Middle Head, Sydney.

  • ( 1620 views, at this stage. ) / I submitted this painting in the Inspired by Rembrandt competition, in the category of Group painting (Like the Nightwatch). The Inspired by Rembrandt competition was held, in 2006, to celebrate Rembrandt’s birthday, 400 years earlier. / / My painting was based on a photo which I had taken of this girl, while she was sitting beside me in the playground (while I was on playground duty). It was in a school in the Liverpool area of Sydney. / The boys were, of course copied from a painting by Rembrandt, the famous Dutch artist. / It then featured in my Remembering: an anthology , to celebrate my 65th birthday, at the Tap Gallery, Palmer Street, Darlinghurst, 6-12 October, 2008. / / And now a great up-date: / Donna found a class-photo, on another website. / Made contact and is now aware of the painting! / 33 years have passed since we sat on one of the metal benches, in the passage-way to the playground, at the back of that school. / . / While digging through my albums: / A long time ago, I copied these stills, from my super8 movie films. / Donna would have been in Year 4 that year and might remember this. / It was the Open Day Concert for the parents. / My third grade pupils did a History of The Dance (e.g., Charleston!) / These 6th Grade girls were grateful for my permission to allow them to mime to an Elvis song!! / Lots of hip-swiveling and therefore a bit daring, ‘cause there was a lot of shakin’ going on. / It was my first year in an executive position and I was allowed to have my way. :) / / . /

  • UP_DATE, again…..it was never worked on again and has continued to be one of my paintings that people comment on. 742 views, at this stage. Based on a slide that I took, when I was teaching in Bourke, in the far north-west of New South Wales. These two boys were standing near the house where I was boarding (called: The Old Gaol), beside the Darling River. —-- Progress report, here! / ... / I shall start a new one for the last class for this term (?), at Hazelhurst and take this one with me for advice on the finishing touches. / .... / UP-DATE: Started a new painting, featuring the other boy, in my slide, taken in 1968. / FURTHER UPDATE: Was part of the About A Man, exhibition, curated by Steve McLaren. / Will feature in the Remembering – an antholy exhibition. Tap Gallery, Darlinghurst. 6-12 October, 2008.

  • Art and beauty – Art Nouveau – a super café House poster

  • Yesterday I took the paintings of the three children, whom I’d met, at Pamela’s Beach House, near Greenfields Beach, NSW, to their parents. / Took one last photograph of them all before parting with them. / Here’s Chelsea, surfing, at Greenfields Beach. / Now to be featured in my Remembering exhibition, to celebrate my 65th birthday, at the Tap Gallery, Palmer Street, Darlinghurst, 6-12 October, 2008.

  • / Our parents exchanged residences, in the mid-fifties, in Gouda, the Netherlands. The two families clicked. Went on a holiday together. The men attended an information evening, re: Australia. / in April, 1956, the two families boarded the migrant ship, Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. I was 12. She was 6. / / That’s when we first slept in the same room. Rather than four males in one cabin and four females in another. Our parents arranged with a couple, returning to Australia, that she and I share with them and our parents shared the other cabin. / / In Australia, after arriving in May, 1956, we moved through for different migrant hostels. Were in the same one, for our last stay in one of those ex-army camps. / / Then the families bought an old house, together. / There, in particular, it felt, to me, like I had a little sister. / / The house was sold and the two families bought home units (apartments) next to each other. / That’s why she was sitting on my bed, talking to a little girl, who was visiting. / In 1967, she and a girlfriend felt like seeing what the Netherlands were like, from which their parents had taken them whem they were little, to live in Sydney. / In 1968, the parents followed her and she stayed in the Netherlands. / / Last week, her mother and I had yet another, lively conversation, via the internet and Skype, about those years and how they’d been. / (I borrowed that last phrase from the C.&W. song: Crystal chandeliers, with a minor change.) / It motivated me to paint this picture. / The mother and I agreed that, contrary to what was always seen as inevitable, the girl and I did not end up together. / For the mother and me, this picture represents one of those cross-roads moments in our lives. / We both agreed that she and I make a great brother and sister but we have both found people, along the way with whom we had other things in common. / Life’s so complicated!! / - / Just to be clear. There are two great people in my life who would not have been here, if the other road had been taken and their mother is still a good friend. / / ....more here.

  • Didn’t mean it to happen but it’s yet another nostalgia trip. / I found myself getting a knowing look, when I said something like that, in the art class, today (Hazelhurst). / / About every two weeks or so, I’ve brought in a painting which has been a portrait and which had stories attached. / Please read more, here

  • “Not everyone’s as sentimental as you are (about it)”, the teacher, at the art class, said yesterday. / I was telling her that, on the way to the coffee machine, in Hazelhurst I crossed paths with a very familiar school uniform, with a boy in it, who gave me a blank look. / Of course! / He may just have been in kindergarten (where I used to go and sometimes help, if a computer was playing up), when I was in my eleventh and last year of teaching at his school. / Time goes so quickly. It feels funny not being connected with these children, from the last school that I taught at, who come to Hazelhurst, (now) on the days that I attend the art class there. / .. / They have nothing to do with this painting. / It’s based on a slide, taken in 1975, at another school where I taught the kids ballroom dances for the school dances but we did square dancing for fun and for display on Open Day, during Education Week. / I happily admit that whenever one of the boys was a bit reluctant because the call from the good old record, in a strong American accent was a bit too complicated, I had such good fun taking his place. / It was just routine that the first few sessions would just be a mess. A tangle of bodies, arms and legs, as confusion set in and then gradually the movements smoothed out. / .. / Another admission: It really is time for better quality brushes and for really keeping them in good condition. / This impressionist style is what I’m hoping for. / I hope you see the paint and that the kids, moving, are a sight blur. / But must admit that it’s the condition of the brushes that add to the messy approach. / .. / It’s another (Aren’t they all?) that I painted for me. No doubt those kids, are now (sometimes) telling their kids (Not quite grand-children yet) about some of my strange ways but I really do remember my three years at this school as a lively, fun, creative, active, (Soccer!!! Art!!! Dancing! Performances! Etc., etc..) time! / .. / It will get a bit more work….but I couldn’t wait. (If you’ve visit my bubble before, you may have strayed across my description of how a boy whom I did not know at all, greeted me, in an unfamilar shopping centre, like I was his very best friend. / ... / Yesterday, in a similar situation, I came across boy who attends the last school that I taught at and retired from. / So seeing the oh so familiar school uniform, it felt as though he should have greeted me with the familiar: Hello Mr M!! But this kid had no idea who I was. And now it was featured in my Remembering exhibition, to celebrate my 65th birthday, at the Tap Gallery, Palmer Street, Darlinghurst, 6-12 October, 2008.

  • 1965. / This painting was part of my Remembering- an anthology exhibition, celebrating my 65th birthday, at the Tap Gallery, Palmer Street, Darlinghurst, 6-12 October, 2008. / This girl happened to be of Dutch background. She was a pupil, in my class, during my second year of teaching, when I still worried about my Dutch accent! ( I had been in Australia, nine years.) / I have now been in Australia 53 years and there is STILL a Dutch accent.
