  • A mini pod of cute toy seals, beckoning us to buy at least one of them, in the shop in the Main Entrance of Bristol Zoo Gardens. / .

  • This is a digitally tweaked image of one of the giant pylons stretching across the Bristol Channel between England and Wales. I took the original photo at sunset from the footpath about half-way along the Severn Road Bridge. I see this as a hint that we mustn’t take our always-available electricity for granted! / . / I’m delighted that this picture has been featured in the Pylon Photos and Art Group! / . / / .

  • I saw this attractively positioned light feature beneath the flight of stairs in Bristol UK’s Arnolfini Centre For The Contemporary Arts. The folks at Arnolfini have kindly given me permission to sell this interior picture to you. Bristol’s Arnolfini has played a significant part in my artistic education and appetite because since the late 1980s, I enjoyed many visits to its accessible and ever-changing galleries and exhibitions with my growing children! / .

  • A group of mobile elevating platforms, or cherry pickers, apparently jostling for elbow room. Caught jostling at the Avonmouth industrial complex near Bristol, England. / .

  • I spotted these reassuring handrails on the doomy dark stairway as I left the remote St Andrews Road railway station one evening. It’s a quiet suburban station in Avonmouth’s industrial area near Bristol, UK. Very many thanks to the Night Photography Group for featuring this photo on 4th September 2008! / .

  • A boatman puttering homewards in the early evening, creating whorls in the calm estuary waters. / . / I’m pleased to say that I’ve sold an A4-sized print of this photo to a local Painter/Artist, and I’ve also sold it a number of times as RedBubble cards … / . / / .

  • The hydraulic valve and arm of JCB excavator, partially extended. / .

  • I’m proud to report that this image is used as the cover-image for the 7-inch vinyl ‘Scars’ record by the Canadian punk/hardcore band called Damages / . / This is a fully detailed photo of a real piece of fencing in Weston-super-Mare. I couldn’t resist the paradoxically soft, curvy, lazy loops of unfriendly sharp razor-wire, sitting above the rigidly regular fence! I adjusted the image a little to keep that dark, dark background. / . / Thank you to the Just Lines Group and the Don’t Fence Me In Group for featuring this photo in 2008! / . / Many thanks to the Shapes & Patterns Group for featuring this photo, on July 9th 2009. / . / / .

  • A black cat watching the suburban hubbub from its comfy, curtained window. / .

  • Sparks of hot molten steel are ejected as Weston-super-Mare’s blacksmith Nathan Bennett re-forms a freshly heated strip of iron. Nathan was happy for me to stand at a safe distance while I worked hard to click in synchrony with his hammer strikes. In the film era this would have been a much more expensive exercise, for sure! I’ve had lots of great feedback from this photo (in other places as well as on RedBubble) and I was pleased to give Nathan a RedBubble-laminated print as a thank-you gift. / . / A HUGE Thank You to the People At Work Group for featuring this photo in Sept/Oct 2009! / . /

  • A wooden cockerel standing proudly on the roof of the windmill (now disused) at Ashton, in Chapel Allerton in Somerset, UK. / .

  • A glimpse of the lights, lines and skeletal supports from the spinning seat of a fun-ride. / .

  • An oblique point of view of some pointed high railings. Although this is a ‘minimalist’ image, it is nevertheless a full-depth photo’ with lots of fine detail clearly visible in the painted steel (in a larger view, or in a print). The entire ‘sky’ is pure white. / .

  • Three boardwalks and a red float, at Portishead Marina near Bristol, UK. / .

  • Freshly applied red, cream and white paint on the black hull of The Shoots Bar & Restaurant, in Bristol’s Baltic Wharf. / .

  • MANY THANKS for your votes, placing this photo as the winner in the Film Photography “People” Challenge in October 2009, and I’m honoured to be featured by the Film Photography Group as well! This photo is of a British Railways Train Guard with his tobacco pipe, checking the railway platform from his Guard’s Van window. Taken in September 1972 on Ilford FP4 film, in my ergonomically all-time favourite camera, my Asahi Pentax S1a with a Takumar F/2.8 lens. Sadly there are still a number of “old film” artifacts evident in the picture in spite of many hours of careful recovery in Photoshop! This explains why I’ve limited the choice of printed medium to cards and canvas. After some additional research by my son, I’m now sure that the railway station is Crewe Station (Lancashire), and that the train is one belonging to London Midland Scottish (LMS), not London Midland Region (LMR) as I’d entered into the photo’s IPTC Caption field. Here’s a close-up of the Guardsman’s badge (or ‘button’), which (provided that it isn’t just a blood-donor’s badge or similar!) might help some UK railway enthusiast discover a bit more about this chap, and the railway network that he worked on. / / This is a 100% crop from the film-scan, with some minor contrast adjustments and with no digital noise reduction. / .

  • Rain drops on a window, forming a beaded-curtain effect with golden out-of-focus orbs from the patio outside. I had my camera with me while in a cafe with my daughter and my sister, and I spotted the raindrops … then those golden orbs appeared in the viewfinder too. A lucky bonus! / . / I’m delighted that this photo has been featured on RedBubble’s front page - / . / / .

  • Mirror-image reflections of an abandoned boat’s superstructure, at high tide near the little marina at Uphill, Weston-super-Mare. / . / I’m pleased to say that I’ve sold an A4-sized print of this photo to a local Sculptor/Artist! / .

  • A pair of Red Admiral butterflies caught sharing a single bloom on a Buddleia flower, and sunlit from behind. Handheld, Nikkor 70-200 VR Zoom lens, on a D200 DSLR. / .

  • A side view of Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier at dusk and at low tide, showing the symmetry of the building, the pier’s pillars and some parked cars, with the glow of the setting sun reflected in the wet sand. I took this photo in February 2008 prior to the July 2008 fire. The burnt-out remains of this fine old pier are already being cleared away and the plans for our new pier have been approved. The pillars and supports are made from tough and sturdy cast-iron so they survived the fire with almost no damage. Weston-super-Mare is in the lovely county of North Somerset in the South West of England. / . / Huge thanks to the Piers And Jetties Group and to the Treasured UK Structures Group for featuring this photograph / .

  • A radial rodent-barrier as viewed over the pavement wall on Grand Parade, above Pulteney Weir in the lovely city of Bath, in England’s South West. The lovely smokey background is simply the turbulent water, swirling close to the river’s edge below the barrier.

  • Sunlight casting a lined shadow of the steel crash-barrier onto the zone marking of a newly painted car park surface.

  • A crowd of brightly coloured and partially inflated hot air balloons, at the 2007 Discovery Channel International Balloon Fiesta, in Bristol, England.

  • Here’s my first Haiku to accompany this photo - Time and tide now spanned … / Autumn dusk quells hunter’s hope / Of bountiful day / . / / . / A lone fisherman with his rod and small shelter, on the banks of the River Severn where it flows into the Bristol Channel, overlooking the Second Severn Crossing and M4 road bridge. This stretch of estuary-bank is called Aust Warth. / .
