`Awapuhi-ko `oko`o / Torch Ginger / Etlingera elatior / Phaeomeria magnifica / Twin Falls Puohokamoa Valley Maui Hawai’i “The torch ginger or wax flower (Etlingera elatior) is believed native to Sulawesi (Celebes) and Jawa, Indonesia (Java). The plant is now grown in many tropical locations both for the extravagant ‘flowers’ and for food. In Malaysia, it is called kantan. The peduncles (stems) of the inflorescence are chopped and added to laksa pots (various curries or soups made with rice noodles). The spectacular inflorescence rises from the rhizome to a height of 60 centimeters (24 inches) to more than a meter (40 inches). The individual flowers will appear from between the pinecone-like scales above the waxy bracts. The leaves grow in ranks from separate stalks along the rhizome. The leafy stalks are evergreen and get 4.5 to 6 meters (15 to 20 feet) tall. Etlingera elatior (Torch Ginger or Ginger Flower) is a species of herbaceous perennial plant. Botanical synonyms include Nicolaia elatior and Phaeomeria speciosa. The showy pink flowers are used in decorative arrangements while the flower buds are an important ingredient in the Nonya dish laksa. In North Sumtara, the flower buds are used for a dish called arsik ikan mas (Andaliman Peppercorn Spiced Carps) It is known in Indonesianas “bunga kecombrang ” or “honje”, Malay as bunga kantan and Thai as kaalaa. In Karo, it is known as asam cekala (asam meaning ‘sour’), and the flower buds, but more importantly the ripe seed pods, which are packed with small black seeds, are an essential ingredient of the Karo version of sayur asam, and are particularly suited to cooking fresh fish.” Information Information Sources Torch Ginger

Up in the mountains of Kos is the village of Zia, where you have spectacular views, Restaurants with roof gardens, a wonderful market (for the tourists), olive groves and folk who age gracefully and enjoy longevity, living life with heart and soul. It was a privilege to have visited and experienced this wonderful place !! / ... I long to go back and visit once more … Canon EOS 450D 18-55mm kit lens

I’d just spent 11 hours on the ferry from Piraeus to Kos Island, my first time on an overnight ferry like that and although I had dozed off once or twice, I hadn’t actually slept. I headed off in search of transport to the other side of the island – I was going to be staying in Kefalos again, a quiet little village with lovely beaches which remain comparatively quiet and great Tavernas which offer delicious local fare at very reasonable prices! As I set off from the harbour the world got bathed in glorious colours as the sun rose … I had to stop and dig the camera out!! :) The silhouetted skyline is the coastline of Turkey.

This little boat sways from side to side in the tides of the day … the owner is a fisherman and restaurant owner and a darned fine cook!! I love the beach-front Taverna where this pretty little boat is at home in the shallows … the food is scrumptious and fresh and reasonably priced. They love it if you order Greek and if you need some help in finding your way through the Greek options on the menu, they are more than happy to explain and make suggestions and guide you to a choice that will delight and satisfy! ... the name of the Taverna? chuckles ... no idea! Look out for the boat moored at the beach!! You can’t mistake the place! Featured in Going Coastal in June 2009 … thank you so, so much! What an honour and delight!!

Although i am not a big fan of the tropical beach photo’s (something overused), while in Thailand I had to get this shot of this amazing beach just to show people how beautiful that image of paradise in your dreams can come to life. I won’t tell you where the beach is, cause we don’t want this one to end up like Ko Panang.

I had to snap up a shot and do the touristy thing. I am happy with the results though. These picturesque boats you’ll find all over the many scattered islands in Thailand.
