The traditional classic chinese word “ai” (love) consist of the word “xing” (heart) at its core. “Ai Xing” in mandarin means “loving heart”. I have simply highlighted the core word “xing” in red to show the meaning of loving heart. “While some simplified characters were adopted from conventional abbreviated forms that have existed for a long time, the vast majority of the changes made by PRC were “unnatural” such as the removal of the symbol for heart (心) from the word love (愛) into the new character (爱).” (Wikipedia) This word is hand-written by me (using a wacom pen & tablet). The foundation of any society is captured in the artifacts it leaves, the Taos pueblo is no different. For centuries the American Indians have lived in these types of dwellings. Making beautiful pottery from the clay earth, and fired in Kiva ovens that sit outside their houses. The Kiva ovens are also used to bake bread. Visit the any pueblo and you will see such scenes. The Taos Pueblo is located in Taos New Mexico, USA.

Second in the series, this shot was taken at the Fremont Indian site, in Utah. The Anasazi lived high on mesas, in settlements within caves and on ledges of narrow canyon walls, and evidence of them is scattered throughout the southwestern parts of North America, the most famous being Chaco Canyon with its use of stone masonry and adobe. They also constructed kivas, deep circular pits and large plazas, where spiritual rituals were performed.
This is an interior shot of a kiva located at Pecos National Historic Park about 20 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, near the village of Glorieta. Although some were also built above ground, kivas typically are subterranean structures. They are used for secret rituals and religious practices of native tribes inhabiting the southwestern portion of the U.S.. The practice of constructing kivas began with the ancient puebloans in the ninth century and continues to this day. Most intact kivas are under the control of native american tribes and photography is forbidden. Pentax K20D, 5 seconds at F/16, 18mm.
Indigenous people occupied this site as early as the 9th century. At the time of Spanish exploration under Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, this site was home to one of the richest pueblos in the americas. For that reason, a Spanish mission was erected here in the early 17th century, only to be destroyed during the Pueblo Uprising / of 1680. The mission ruins are located at Pecos National Historic Park about 20 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, near the village of Glorieta. In the foreground is the entrance to a kiva Although some were also built above ground, kivas typically are subterranean structures used for secret rituals and religious practices of native tribes inhabiting the southwestern portion of the U.S.. My beautiful wife, Hye, accompanies me on all photography trips. I’m a self-declared guerrilla photographer, so it’s a lot of getting in, taking the shot, getting out, on to the next locale. She isn’t into photography in the same way I am, so when we’re slogging through a Bisti mud field with five pounds of goop on each boot, it is a whole ‘nother experience for her. But she soldiers on, and I love and appreciate her all the more for it. In this shot, she lets her ambivalence show. Taken as she prepared to ascend the wooden ladder of a kiva located at Pecos Historic National Park, Pecos Wilderness, New Mexico. Pentax K20D, 1/50 @ F5.6, 55mm, ISO 800. I opened this as a RAW file in PSP3 and gave it a levels adjustment before saving it as a TIFF file. Then I opened it in PSP XII, copied a layer that I converted to B&W, then dialed the opacity down to 53% before flattening the image and copying again as another new layer. I coated that layer with the hot wax effect and brought the opacity down to 26 percent before flattening the image and saving it as a JPEG.

Tenth in the series, this shot was taken in Chaco Canyon at Pueblo Bonito. Around 750 AD, Chaco Canyon was built and strongly influenced by the trade with the Toltecs, with evidence of extensive trading in turquoise, pipestone, shells, carved flutes, mosaic baskets, fine pottery, copper bells and Macaw feathers. Archaeologists have discovered at least 150 great house styles outside of Chaco Canyon which was known as the greatest settlement in North America. Over one million blocks of sandstone weighing some 30,000 tons, just to construct Pueblo Bonito. Along its back perimeter, the rooms stood 5 stories high and at its peak had over 700 rooms, 37 kivas, two community kivas and covered over 4 1/2 acres.
