Thought I would show you a glimpse of how my town looks in the central business area. This is on the corner of Kerk (Church) Street and Eksteen Street in Middelburg, Mpumalanga (South Africa). A closeup of the White Church. Image Copyright: Mariaan Krog 2008. / Photos already in my portfolio: / / / History: / Middelburg was established as Nasareth, (root from dry land), in 1864 by the Voortrekkers on the banks of the Klein Olifants River. The name was changed in 1872 to Middelburg to mark its situation midway between the Transvaal capital Pretoria and the gold mining town of Lydenburg. A Dutch Reformed Church was built in 1890 and became a focal point in the area. The British built a large concentration camp in Middelburg during the Second Boer War. The Memorial Museum was built at the site next to the 1,381 graves of women and children died here.Across the ridge on the north-western side towards Botshabelo, the township of Mhluzi developed simultaneously and became part of greater Middelburg in 1994. The town also has its share of places of historical interest, including the White Church which was built in 1890. Proclaimed a historical monument, this is a true landmark of Middelburg, due to its size and architectural design. It was used by British soldiers during the second Anglo Boer War and is one of the few remaining structures that wasn’t destroyed during the war. The Meyer’s Bridge, built in 1896, has remained standing for over a century, surviving numerous floods. This national monument was created as a road link between Lydenburg and Middelburg at the turn of the century. / See my photo of this bridge: / Middelburg, the birthplace of celebrated playwright Athol Fugard, is in the heart of “Jock of the Bushveld” country. *Click on this link to see a satellite image of Middelburg / Copyright: Google Maps.

the church of holy trinity, more popularly known as the Wotruba Church .
one architectural gem at the outskirts of Vienna. This church was designed by the sculptor Fritz Wotruba .
A shot of the ribbed vault in the choir of the church in St.Ilgen. A few years ago the walls were restaurated to former glory (though it is a newer style than the building itself, but if at that time any paintings decorated the walls none of them have survived long enough to be restored) The small village has been first mentioned around the year 920 and the church isn’t much younger.
The Saint Donatus church (Sv. Donat) in Zadar (Croatia) is a beautiful Pre-Romanesque / Byzantine (9th century) church. The massive dome of the rotunda is surrounded by a vaulted gallery in two stories which also extends around the three apses to the east. In the foundations that are partially open to see one can spot parts of various columns that used to be part of the old Roman forum. This lead to the traditional belief that this church was built on the site of a temple of Juno (though that is now disputed and believed to be a wrong conclusion). Location: Zadar (Croatia)

images produced by a HOLGA are not collected for their technical value…wotsaholga…a holga is a medium format 120mm film camera famous for its vignetting effect and peculiar light leakage…because of these and other anomalies it has a slightly surrealistic point of view…one of the worlds most successful mistakes…this low tech cult camera has won the hearts of artists worldwide / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holga
we stumbled upon this old log cabin style 1865 chapel in a munich park and as if requested by the resident angel a shaft of light appeared from the heavens just as the picture was taken
