  • Featured recently in DSLR Users, A Vision of Flight, and 5 other groups since being uploaded. Winner in the Best of K Challenge in Alphabet Soup. Photographing kingfishers is a challenge. They are shy of humans. They don’t sit still for long, and when they move, they are very fast. Tracking them is very difficult, requiring lots of patience and good luck. This image was captured at the Oyster Bay Shoreline Park on Vancouver Island, Canada. Nikon D300, Nikkor 600 mm lens, ISO 800, 1/1000 sec, at F8

  • Young New Zealand Kingfisher. This was taken at the Bird Rescue place in Auckland. Cat got this one, but it was feisty and recovered and returned to the wild. The blue background is acutally a tshirt, not the sky!

  • This is a difficult bird to photograph, and on this day as close as I could get at the Oyster Bay Shoreline Park on the east coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. The bird is a belted kingfisher, a common year round resident of the temperate rain forest of British Columbia. This bird is a master fisher, who spots its prey from the air, and dives into the water to capture it. Nikon D300, Nikkor 600 mm lens, ISO 800, F6.3, 1/1000 second
