  • Kiev, Ukraine. Canon Power shot S3 Is with full zoom. The older right-bank (western) part of the city is represented by numerous woody hills, whera I took this shot. Kiev expanded to the Dnieper’s lowland left bank (to the east and on the picture view) only in the twentieth century. Significant areas of the left-bank Dnieper valley were artificially sand-deposited, and are protected by dams.

  • The Saint Andrew’s Church or sometimes [incorrectly] the Cathedral of Saint Andrew (Ukrainian: Андрiївська церква; Russian: Андреевская церковь) is a major Baroque church located in Kiev (Kyiv), the capital of Ukraine. The church was constructed in 1747–1754, to a design by the Imperial Russian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The Saint Andrew’s Church overlooks the historic Podol neighborhood, situated on a steep hill to which the church gave its current name Andriyivska Hill ( Andreevskiy Spusk – russan image below) It is currently one of four architectural landmarks of Ukraine, which were put down on the List of Mankind Treasures of Five Continents by the world society. The beginning of the currently standing St. Andrew’s Church began with the arrival of the Russian Empress Elizabeth. She decided to construct a summer residence for herself, consisting of a palace (see bellow) and a church. The palace was to be located in the Pechersk neighborhood while the church was to be on the Andriyivska Hill. On September 9, 1744, the official ceremony starting the construction of the St. Andrew’s Church began with the Empress laying the first three founding stones herself. / The church’s pulpit, rarely seen in Eastern Orthodox constructions. The German architect Johann-Gottfried Schedel was hired to draft out the plans for the church along with the engineer De Bocket. In 1745, Schedel worked out a project, which was later rejected by the Petersburg Building Chancellery. The next person hired was the head architect of the imperial court, Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who worked out a plan which was closely based on a church of a Saint Petersburg institut As the church sits at top of the hill, foundation problems have been one of the main concerns of preservationists. More recently, the foundation below the church has started to shift, causing some concerns that the church’s foundation might collapse. Cracks have already appeared in the foundation, and some of the church’s falling decor has been found in neighboring areas. Canon Power Shot S3 IS , September 2009

  • Watercolour It’s been almost 10 years since I was in the Ukraine, but one of the most memorable sites I visited was St Sophia Cathedral in Kiev. There are seven beautiful golden domes that can be viewed from a higher viewpoint and catacombs that can be explored underground. I own a watercolour of that higher view that I bought from a sidewalk artist for ten American dollars and it proudly hangs in my home today.

  • Kiev , Ukraine St Sophia Cathedral Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev is an outstanding architectural monument of Kievan Rus’. Today, it is one of the city’s best known landmarks and the first Ukrainian patrimony to be inscribed on the World Heritage List. • Kiev , Ukraine St Sophia Cathedral The cathedral’s name comes from the 6th-century Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople (meaning Holy Wisdom, and dedicated to the Holy Wisdom of God rather than a specific saint named Sophia). According to a less popular theory, its model was the 13-domed oaken Saint Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod (ca. 989), which Yaroslav I the Wise determined to imitate in stone as a sign of gratitude to the citizens of Novgorod who had helped him secure the Kievan throne in 1019. The first foundations were laid in 1037, but the cathedral took two decades to complete. The structure has 5 naves, 5 apses, and (quite surprisingly for Byzantine architecture) 13 cupolas. It is surrounded by two-tier galleries from three sides. Measuring 37 to 55 m (121 to 180 ft), the exterior used to be faced with plinths. On the inside, it retains mosaics and frescos from the eleventh century, including a dilapidated representation of Yaroslav’s family, and the Virgin Orans. Originally the cathedral was a burial place of the Kievan rulers including Vladimir Monomakh, Vsevolod Yaroslavich and of course the cathedral’s founder Yaroslav I the Wise, although only the latter’s grave survived to our days Loaded this by request for Jim Canon Power Shot S3 IS

The Hidropark station of Kiev Metro is located on Venetsians’kyj island. Current activities available: number of beaches , boat and catamarans rental, ping-pong and tennis, paintball and football, water attractions, restaurants, casino and Sun-City Slavutych disco club (right on the beach), open-air gym (Soviet era heritage) and riverboat excursions.
