  • Not long before sunset we came across this lioness and cubs resting in the long grass. I got quite low to the ground for this to give the appearance of looking through the grass. I think it sort of works, but please let me know what you think (or would change)! / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • This lioness was up so early one morning that the dew still clung to her chin. I like the way the cub looks up to her as she stares ahead. / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • A cheetah in Kenya’s Masai Mara with freshly caught antelope. We followed her for a while, she was stalking a group of antelopes. Suddenly she gave chase and this youngster panicked and ran into a wildebeest. Then she went in for the kill. It was awesome and terrible at the same time to watch her suffocate her prey. Taken with Nikon D50.

  • WILD & FREE / / This leopard was really hard to see while it rested deep inside a large bush. I was lucky enough to get this shot with nothing covering the eye! / / (Samburu National Park – Kenya) / / / >< / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • An African Elephant and her calf in the Masai Mara, Kenya. We were surrounded by a herd of about 25 elephants, a magical experience.

  • WILD & FREE Duma – the Swahili name for cheetah, can weigh between 110 to 140 pounds and have a lifespan of between 10 to 20 years. (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / Listed as ‘Vulnerable’ in 2008 / / The known cheetah population is approximately 7,500 adult animals. Additional areas where cheetah status is poorly known are unlikely to raise the total to over 10,000. Given Myers (1975) estimate of 15,000 cheetahs in Africa in the 1970s, a decline of at least 30% is suspected over the past 18 years (3 generations). The decline is primarily due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as killing and capture of cheetahs as livestock depredators, primarily, as well as for trade (IUCN Cats Red List Workshop 2007). • The Samburu People are an ethnic group in north central Kenya that are related to but distinct from the Maasai. The Samburu are semi-nomadic pastoralists who herd mainly cattle but also keep sheep, goats and camels.

  • Cheetah Cub – Maasai Mara National Park, Kenya. I’ve always been impressed at how perfectly well groomed most RedBubble Cheetahs appear. Cheetahs are not particularly well known for personal hygiene and most of the cheetahs I’ve seen have been really rather scruffy. I caught this 6 month old cub in March after the first downpour of Kenya’s “Long Rains”. He had been rolling in the mud.

  • Taken at a Masai Village, Amboseli National Park, Kenya. In the shade of the Acacia Tree, where I sat with the Masai villagers, it was several degrees cooler than out in the open. This is where the men will sit and discuss important matters and make decisions of importance, just relax, or play a game that resembles Backgammon. or sleep ! / As I sat, enthralled with the whole experience, this handsome young warrior was sitting right by me. I could not help but notice the intensity and clarity of his alert young eyes, and asked his permission to take his photograph. He consented quite enthusiastically, to my delight ! / A magical experience ! I have tried to convey the intensity of the hot sun outwith the Acacia tree, and the deep shade that we sat in, and the ever present dust !! I added a texture in Photoshop CS3 to achieve this effect.
