  • WILD & FREE / / Honey (named after the colour of her eyes) and her three cubs were very obliging to rest on this ridge whilst they scanned the plains for breakfast. Taken in the Masai Mara early one morning about half an hour after sunrise, this is one of my favourite images and I find myself always coming back to it. / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / The world’s fastest land animal, the cheetah, is a unique and the most specialized member of the cat family and can reach speeds of 70 mph. Unlike other cats, the cheetah has a leaner body, longer legs, and has been referred to as the greyhound of the cats. It is not an aggressive animal, using flight versus fight. With its weak jaws and small teeth, the price it paid for speed, it cannot fight larger predators to protect its kill or young. The cheetah was once a common animal found on five continents, but is slowly losing its race for survival and is now classed as an Endangered Species! • WILD & FREE / / We were really lucky to come across these “Little Bee Eaters” whilst on safari in Samburu National Park. They didn’t sit still for long, always moving then flying away, but when they did I was fortunate enough to get this shot. / / (Samburu National Park – Kenya) / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • At the end of a long 14 hour game drive, there’s nothing better than standing with a cold beer and watching the sun set over the plains, before heading back to camp for something to eat! / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • This was the first mating action of the morning for these lions, which is usually the most violent (as you can see here)! We were really lucky to find them just after first light while the park was still empty! / / / (Samburu National Park – Kenya) / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • “Seeing is different than being told.” / Proverb from Kenya / —-—— As I researched Kenya, where this girl is from, I was struck by the fact that Kenya… is a butterfly rich country. And so it made sense to adorn this young one with the intense, piercing gaze… with the brilliance of butterflies. • Mother and baby Gerenuk – Samburu National Park, Kenya. The Gerenuk is a small, delicate antelope which lives in the remote desert areas of Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia. The elongated neck allows it to browse higher up than other antelopes its size. Gerenuks can often be seen feeding erect – standing on their hind legs.

  • My greeting when I visited a Masai village alone. They were wonderful people, I will never forget them. / The light was very intense, and highlighted the vivid colours of their colourful costumes. Many of them still observe the old customs and maintain the traditional way of life. • As we drove out of our Lodge in Amboseli on the final morning of our stay , at sunrise, there was a herd of Buffalo heading for the waterhole, kicking up the ever present dust. Their hooves made a wonderful sound in the silence. The scene lasted only seconds, but will be forever imprinted on my mind. The eternal struggle for existence,of many animals, to reach water, without being attacked by a predator, crossed my mind as I frantically shot my image. / You snooze, you lose !! / Mount Kilimabjaro peers through the thick dust, barely discernable. Taken on a CanonEOS40D.

  • This wildebeest, or Godfrey the gnu as we named him, was more interested in keeping an eye on us than watching the magnificent sunset going on behind him. He might also, of course, have been keeping a wary eye on a couple of lions that were lazing in the evening sun not far from us. / However, he was an obliging fellow; he stood still as the sun went down behind him and it wasn’t until the sun disappeared from our view that he seemed to shrug and wander off along the ridge. / Taken in the Masai Mara, Kenya. / Canon EOS 3 with Canon 300mm f2.8L lens and x2 extender using Fuji Provia transparency fim. Scanned with a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED scanner.

  • Sunset on the Masai Mara in Kenya is a magical time. The light to the west changes through all shades of yellow, orange and red as the ball of the sun sinks to the horizon. For many animals, it signals the time to take more care; the hunters are arousing from their daytime reverie and thinking about supper; for others, it’s just another day over. Canon EOS3 with Canon 300mm f2.8 lens using Fuji provia film. This shot was taken a few minutes before my image Wildebeest Sunset (clickable image)
