  • Taken from Kings Tableland, over looking the Jamison valley in the Blue Mountains, NSW. Thanks to Leeo for nominating this image for Pay it Forward. Here’s what Leeo said about this image: / Foggy images are one of my all time faves, and this is one of the best that I have ever seen! The fog / low cloud is just incredible! The lighting on the cliff faces of the blue mountains is just beautiful & the Anticrepuscular Rays in the sky just finish it off beautifully Thanks again Leanne.

  • Back to one of my favourite places (and subjects!) the Jamison Valley. / The ever changing climatic conditions means that this place is rarely the same twice. / Mt Solitary in the background.

Thanks for looking The Legend / _The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, ‘Meehni’, ‘Wimlah’ and Gunnedoo’ lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe. These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry. The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle. As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come._

  • I ventured up to Leura Cascades in the Blue Mountains today to try my hand at some waterfall photography.. This was one of the results, I hope you like it!! I used a circular polarizer to darken the scene and allow longer shutter speeds to capture the water flow better.. / Thanks very much for looking, comments and critiquing are most welcome.. Best Viewed LARGE EXIF / Date: 23/05/2008 @ 2:16pm / Camera: Nikon D40 / Lens: Nikon 18-55mm II / Focal Length: 22mm / Aperture: f/18 / Shutter: 20 seconds / ISO: 200 Looks great as a framed print, don’t you think? :P /

  • An image I never thought I’d post. This is the colour version of an old favourite: BEST VIEWED LARGE!

  • The Legend of the Three Sisters / Long ago in the Blue Mountains there lived three Aboriginal sisters. They were Meenhi, Wimlah and Gunnedoo, whose Witch Doctor father was called Tyawan. Only one creature was feared by all … the Bunyip who lived in a deep hole. When Tyawan had to pass the hole, he would leave his daughters safely on the cliff behind the rocky wall. One day, waving goodbye to his daughters, he descended the cliff steps. On top of the cliff a big centipede suddenly appeared and frightened Meenhi, who threw a stone at it. The stone rolled over the cliff and crashed into the valley. Birds, animals and fairies stopped still as the rocks behind the three sisters split open, leaving them on a thin ledge. The angy Bunyip emerged to see the terrified sisters in the valley. Tyawan saw the Bunyip close to his daughters so he pointed his magic bone at the girls and turned them to stone. They would be safe there until the Bunyip had gone and then Tyawan would return them to their former selves. The Bunyip then chased Tyawan who found himself trapped, so he changed himself into a Lyre Bird. Everyone was safe, but Tyawan had dropped his magic bone. After the Bunyip had gone, Tyawan searched and searched for his bone … and he is still searching. The Three Sisters stand silently watching him from their ledge, hoping he’ll find the bone and turn them back to Aboriginal girls. As you look at the Three Sisters, you can hear Tyawan … the Lyre Bird … calling his daughters as his search for the lost bone continues…......... This view is from one of the many lookouts on Cliff Drive at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains NSW Australia. It looks directly at the Three Sisters with the Skyway and Katoomba Falls (out of view) located to the left of the picture. The Three Sisters can be accessed from Echo Point and are the icon figure of the Blue Mountains. In the background you will see the typical blue haze attributed to the eucalypt mist that is present most days in this area and from which the area was originally named – The Blue Mountains. /

  • THIS IS A BIG IMAGE VIEW LARGER FOR BEST RESULTS This shot was taken from Echo Point in the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area at sunset, it was created from 5 bracketed images using a Nikon D300 fitted with a Nikon 18-200mm. No filters were used. The rock formations to the left are known as “The Three Sisters” the image was taken at sunrise looking past the Sisters certainly have a great view. The Blue Mountains are located 2 hours west of Sydney by road, also by train for visitors to Sydney, there are also organised day trips via motor coach that will take you to the area for the day…. though if you have the time spend a few days in the area. You can see all the attractions, have a devonshire tea in one of the many teahouses, or sit on the edge of the valley that seems to go on forever, and listen to the birdlife. Bushwalking is a must !

  • One of my most favourite places in the Blue Mountains is Mt Hay. In the afternoons I often used to go and sit out there and draw or meditate… I have a lot of memories surrounding this place. When we moved I wanted do a painting of the view from where I used to sit… so this is another of my ‘firsts’ after a long layoff. It was a painting ‘I needed to get off my chest’ ... so to speak… : ) I don’t think the photo really does it justice but still… here it is! Oil on canvas / 24×20

  • The full 180 degree view of the magnificent Jamison Valley from King’s Tableland in the east to Narrow Neck Plateau in the west and south to the Wild Dog Ranges. VIEW LARGE FOR MAXIMUM OPTICAL PLEASURE!

  • A Katoomba local with his pet cockatoo. She’s 2 years old and named Flossie! She seemed quite content sitting on her owners knee… even with all the festivities happening all around her. Taken outside one of the cafe’s in Katoomba during the Winter Magic Festival this year. Finished in the top ten of the ‘People I have met along the way’ challenge in the Mood and Ambience group.

  • The weather for this years Winter Magic Festival was a bit of everything. But even though there was rain and fog and it was cold… it didn’t stop the crowds from enjoying themselves! Late in the afternoon the mist started to roll in and it was getting dark.. a few storeholders were starting to pack up but the street was still full of people. I took a photo at the time because I really liked the atmosphere and then when I had my week away recently, I let myself start to play with it! This is the result so far… I think I would like to try a few other ideas too… : )) Mixed Media on canvas paper. / 40.5×60

  • This little painting is the result of an oil sketch I did when I was in Katoomba recently. I love how when you drive or walk around Katoomba (or the other villages of the upper mountains) you often turn a corner or crest a hill and you find yourself confronted by the most spectacular view. There are a few spots which I really love. Whenever I was on my way to work (or whatever), these glimpses would energise me for the day ahead… reminding me of where we were… in a City within a World Heritage National Park. The way that civilisation exists along a narrow plateau which gives way to mountains and valleys also fascinates me. I often feel that Mother Nature is being incredibly generous in allowing our towns to flourish here… although she does remind us who’s boss occasionally…! This is the view across South Katoomba from the Mountain Heritage Carpark at the top of Lovel St Katoomba. Oil on Canvas / 40.5×30.5

  • The first time I visited the mid section of Katoomba Falls I flunked the composition. Second time round I broke a few land-based rules to get the right position. With such depth to capture, as opposed to the “front-on” angle, or even side-on, I find a long exposure, in this case 100 seconds, fills that depth with body. Seeping the light with a 9-stop ND filter, like dripping treacle off a spoon. Or something poetic like that. Canon 5D Mark II, shot in Monochrome. Blue Mountains National Park.
