A Black Lahu boy rides his brakeless, homemade go-kart through his pituresque village on the Burmese border in northern Thailand. This shot was taken in 1979, before the village had a road, or the villagers had seen a car. When a bulldozer pushed a road into their village a few years later, people took packed lunches to watch, with amazement ,the roadbuilding. Before then, the biggest earthmover they knew of was a hoe.

Featured in the movie “Hot Rod Gang” – released June 1958 / Cover Car Hot Rod Magazine – October 1958 / Winner – America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” award 1958 and 1959 Built expressly to win the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster Trophy at Oakland Roadster Show, construction on Richard Peters flathead powered 1929 Ford pick up truck began in 1957 by George Barris. The funny part is that the truck actually won the prize two times. First in 1958 and then also in 1959. Richard Peters of Fresno, California raced his flatbed truck on the dirt roads around Fresno before he decided that it was time to make it faster and nicer. During the build, on December 7, 1957 the Barris Shop caught fire, and fourteen cars were lost in the fire. The Ala Kart was in a separate room, and was luckily spared from the fire. With the Oakland Roadster Show only a couple of months away, things were now in a real hurry. The Ala Kart is known for being the first Show Rod that turned into a model car kit. After AMT bought the Ala Kart in 1961, the model kit was released late 1961. The Ala Kart model kit sold more than 1 million kits the following year.
