Here’s my Big 2008 Project : Collect funds for an association. / So this contest is really special. / Read and participate if you are interested. You can participate in different ways. Humanity needs us. / We all live together but there are differencies. / We were not born in the same place, we were not born with the same abilities, we were not born in the same society, in the same family, We did not all get the same opportunities. / We are not equal. We all need each other, we all need a hand, in different manners, different ways. In the World… / A child die of hunger each 5 seconds… / 100 persons die each day of hunger… October 17, World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty. / On October17, 1987 Joseph Wresinski made a speech in Paris – France. (read this speach at the end of this article). / In 1992 the United Nations recognized this day as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This contest is made to fight against poverty. / We can all show our support, we can all lend a hand. / This contest will be really special. / The prizes for the winners will be : FUNDS for a NGO (Non-Governementale Association) : CONCERN (You know this association from the White Band). And thus i created rêverie. / Done it in Paint Shop Pro. I repainted some part of the body to give an ethereal feelings, put some mist in the background and behind the model (you can see it, but without it, it doesn’t look the same. i applied several textures and various colored layers, with the “screen” effect. As well as for the wings : in fact they are two layers, the same duplicated, the above one set as “screen”. I painted over a lot. i created several layers for the hair and the dress, the same technic : paint brush, smudging a lot, various sizes and colors. I use a lot blend “screen” layers, i duplicate them, change the brightness ad set them to “screen”. BIG brushes for the backgrouds, like blurred flowers. How to change the colors? Easy : I often use the varition filter. And i blend. Unmarried Pwo Karen girls in the mountains of northern Thailand traditionally wear a long one-piece dress that they have hand woven from homespun white cotton and brightly coloured wool. Betel chewers and heavy smokers since a very young age, the girls further decorate themselves with gold-capped teeth, earings, glass beads and armfulls of brass and aluminium bangles. They wear their accessories day and night, and some women never remove their bangles and take them to their funeral pyre. Karen speakers from various subgroups have lived in Burma for thousands of years and in northern Thailand for several centuries. They are the most populous hilltribe in Thailand and the unlike most of the other ethnic highland groups, the Karen never cultivated opium poppy. In Burma many of the Karen have been converted to Christianity and Buddhism and along the Thai border they have been waging a fierce battle with the Burmese army for more than 50 years. In 2009 the Burmese launched a major offensive against the last of the KNU, the predominantly Christian Karen army, and the fighting continues. Many of the Thai Karen have maintained their traditional animist beliefs and matriachial society and are not involved in the war along the border. Hundreds of thousands of Burmese Karen have fled the fighting and many of them are housed in massive refugee camps inside Thailand. These gentle people have sufferd immensly since the British granted independence. Many older Karen who fought for the British against the Japanese in the Second World War feel betrayed.

A Pwo Karen girl smiles at a friend while weaving cloth on a backstrap loom. She weaves for hours almost every day in her spare time, and it can take weeks to produce enough cloth for one dress. The process is very meditative. Once, all Karen girls living in the mountains of northern Thailand and Burma learnt how to gin, spin, weave and dye cotton. They produced their own clothing as well as clothes, shoulder bags and blankets for their family. Like many tasks in hilltribe villages, weaving is exclusively performed by females. Men and boys work with knives and axes, clearing forest, building houses, hunting, and weaving bamboo and rattan utensils. Karen women, however, also wield axes, as they are the chief gatherers of firewood from the forest near their village. Field work, out of neccessity, is shared by all. Although many Karen continue to weave and wear their traditional clothes, the influx of cheap commercial cloth and clothing is quickly undermining this milleniums-old skill. This candid shot was taken in southern Mae Hong Son province in the early 1980s with a Nikon FM2, nikkor 135mm lense and kodachrome slide film. Scanned at 7200 dpi and cleaned in photoshop and ACDSee Pro at 200%.
