Kapiti Island is a nature reserve lying off the West Coast of the North Island, New Zealand. All the introduced species which cause havoc with the local flora and fauna have been eradicated, and the island is reverting step by step to virgin forest. At the North end of the Island I came across ths old chair lying on the verandah of an old shed. My eye was drawn to the broken down appearance of both the shed and the chair.

After seeing the amazing photos of Antanas I wanted to have a try at his “face in the sky” pic. So here it is, my first go at layering different photos! Photo of my daughter taken by my mother, Maya Moora, used with permission. Photo of Kapiti Island, New Zealand, my own. Layered and colour adjusted in Photoshop Elements 2.0. While I was shooting this sunset, some boys came along, aged around about 12-14. One came up to me and asked me what I was taking photos of. I said “The sunset”. He asked, “the what?”. Thinking he hadn’t heard me properly, I repeated, “The sunset”. He looked at me blankly, as though he had never heard of such a thing. I pointed to the sky and said “Look, over there!”. He looked up and said “Oh, you mean all that f-ing orange and shit?” / Yeah. That. I was, quite frankly, stunned that a child could get to the age of 13 (or thereabouts) and not know that the sun sets and rises, or that all that “f-ing orange and shit” is called a sunset. Even a week later, I am still gobsmacked. And more than a little sad. Sunset in Aotearoa’s beautiful Kapiti Coast, on the North Island of New Zealand. Straight off camera, apart from slight cropping and retouch of a distracting streetlight. Kodak Easyshare CX3700 point and shoot.

This was my entry for the Yellow Pages Art Awards. The brief was “show us what you love about where you live” on a square-shaped artwork. For me, that is the beach and the view of Kapiti Island. Among other things, of course. The image shows my eye, with an image of a Kapiti beach and Kapiti Island. This entry didn’t make the finals but that’s ok by me, I love it anyway!! :) All resources used my own, taken on my Canon Powershot A480 P&S. Proudly New Zealand-made. :) Featured in Eye Macros, Nov 13, 2009.
