Kangtega (6685m), known also as the Saddle, from Pangboche while walking the Everest Base Camp trek, Nepal in November 2007.
The beautiful views at Dusa above the Lobuche Khola valley in fresh snow, with Ama Dablam 6856m to the left and the jagged peak of Taboche Peak 6367m, right. Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal.
Kangtega mountain emerges from the morning mists as the sun breaks through clouds. This was my first view of snow in Nepal peering from the window of a lodge nestled against the mountainside above Namche Bazar. After three days hiking through mist and light rain I finally realised that I had really come to be among the world’s greatest mountains. Kangtega rises 6685m in the Hinku Himal range on the border of the Sagarmatha and Makalu Barun national parks. It is flanked on four sides by the Kyashar, Phungi, Kangtega and Hinku Nup glaciers.
Taboche Peak 6367m rises majestically from the floor of the valley of the Lobuche Khola River in the Nepalese Himalayas. To the right is Cholatse with her 6335m peak just in the clouds. At the foot of the valley above the village of Pheriche rises the twin peaks of Kangtega 6685m with Thamserku 6608m to her right. The fresh snow fell deep in the valley the night before. These mountains are some of the world’s most famous and the Sagarmatha National Park is their home.
Kangtega 6685m rises above the valley of the Phungi Glacier. - just go with it / grab my hand and run for miles / these waves ride high on time / these waves encompass the horizon / from one vision / the space between is an open door / this journey is ours our trust is built in a fragile world / yet with the breath of life this world searches for us / you can walk into valleys where the mountains are the sky / you can get lost in the landscape of dreams / the peace is yours for the taking / the reflection is so pure / come to my valley it’s in my mind / it’s there / it can be found / on the other side of reality / another dimension that is so close / you just have to search a little in the moonlight / to find it i will reckon that by the colour of desire / comes walking a morning of magic / and cold air to bring you alive again / take your vision and hold it inside until the clouds burst / release this rain for there is no sorrow i am these thoughts / i have found it inside / and I give it to your sun
Kangtega 6685m, Nepal, the Himalayas. It’s hard to capture the full height of mountains as often there is another mountain in front obscuring part of the view, but I think this one shows a fair chunk of the shoulders and folds of rock and ridges that make up Kangtega. My guess, and going from my trusty pocket map, is you’re probably looking at just under 3 kilometres of vertical. I really get lost in these pics every time I look at them.
That’s Thamserku on the right and Kangtega on left obscured by cloud. Shot just above Namche Bazaar. Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal
