Gorgeous isn’t he? This fellow was watching us from the top of a tree.
I found this Grass tree (Xanthorrhoea australis) at Half Way Hut at Wilsons Promontory NP after the 2005 bush fires. The Grass tree like many Australian plants needs fire to propagate effectively. Under normal conditions it is rare for the flower to form, after fire however it is a different story with every grasstree in sight sporting an amazing ‘kangaroo tail’ from its mop. Usually they are straight as a die so to find such a shapely specimen really grabbed my attention. Finding a nice angle with which to show it off proved a little more problematic. After much chin scratching and walking around in circles I ended up with my back in the dirt where I eventually found a nice juxtaposition of the ‘tail’ with the sky without trees intruding into the frame in inappropriate spots… click. Taken at perth zoo, western australia This guy wasn’t playing ball with the tourists – he had his back to us but I walked round to the other side, stood on a milk crate and managed to capture him between the trees, just sitting in the branches having a think. He has a beautiful long furry tail hanging down but I cropped it to focus on his eyes. Nikon D700, borrowed Nikon 70-300mm telephoto lens, @ 300mm, ISO400, f/5.6, 1/30 sec, handheld, balanced precariously on milk crate!

An acrylic painting on canvas paper of what I would like an Australian landscape to look like at Christmas time. As a young girl growing up in the UK our Christmases were always White, here in Australia they are always sunny and hot! Sending you greetings from Australia for the festive season! White Christmas Christmas Eve we were all aglow / with the heat of the sun there was no snow. / At the end of the day Santa would be on his way / with toys and gifts piled in his sleigh! / I wish he could give us a snow surprise / As we turned out the lights we peeked outside. / To our delight a winter wonderland we saw, / a White Chistmas we will have who could ask for more! Linda
An acrylic painting on canvas paper of a winter wonderland. We have sun and heat here but I always remember my childhood Christmases being White. So this is my idea of what a White Christmas should look like in Australia. (Also a Christmas card version of this painting in my portfolio). White Christmas Christmas Eve we were all aglow / with the heat of the sun there was no snow! / At the end of the day Santa would be on his way.. / with toys and gifts piled high in his sleigh! / I wish he could give us a snow surprise, / as we turned out the lights we peeked outside. / To our delight a winter wonderland we saw, / a white Christmas we will have, who could ask for more!
