Kaiju Shokushu Ni
Kaiju Kaiju too
What to do, what to do, what to do? When the going gets tough, the tough do Japanese monster tees? I can’t think of anything for a tee design. Well, I can think of lots of things, but nothing that sounds like a winner. That’s worse than no ideas at all.Anyway, Gamera deserves his own shirt. It’s hard to find good photos to work with of these old monsters anymore. Everything now is HD, or some other impressive abbreviation. I have more fun working from these grainy old photos anyway. More of a challenge. I may have to create my own kaiju. I think mobii would be a great name for something that erupted from deep in the sea, and stomped on a city or two. I’d do it. Here’s to giant fire breathing flying turtles!

For the original version of this picture, see “The Creative Process” in my gallery. A couple years ago, while I was browsing artwork online, an idea for a painting with a big, surreal, plasticy octopus destroying a city just popped into my head. I couldn’t tell you exactly where it comes from, though I think it was partially inspired by an old Powerpuff Girls add. I’d originally intended to do this in photoshop, but ended up doing it as the final project for my painting class in college. I was never quite pleased with the results, and when I had to do some pieces for my portfolio for grad school, I jumped on the chance to do this piece right. This was painted from scratch in Photoshop using a Wacom tablet. I wanted to experiment with bold graphic design styles with light airbrushing, and I think it came out rather nicely. The flames and clouds were a real challenge. I’d originally thought of this picture as just a silly image that popped into my head, but the more I worked on it, the more it seemed to mean something. When an art professor noted that the lighting on the creature doesn’t match its surroundings, something clicked. I did this second version where the creature is correctly underlit, and I think the change is interesting. I don’t like the composition as much, but the piece feels much more involved and dynamic. I think it feels much more like he’s really destroying the city. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, he shoots a big fiery laser from his third eye there. That’s why everything’s on fire.
It looks like Godzilla, but due to international copyright law, it’s not! Update: New colors now available!
The Black King’s Rook / Artist: Simon Sherry / Biography: Danny The Black King and his Bullrock The Bullrock, or King’s Rook, are massive creatures created by the Shaman to carry supplies and extra weapons for the Army of the Black Spear. Strong but limited in movement due to their sheer size, they are the product of a long extinct race of Pachyderm that was gene-spliced with the last single survivor of the Giant race dwelling in the Dark Cathedrals of the Shaman’s Apothecary. Only ever used for battle, Bullrocks are treated with special care during times of non-war. (Peace isn’t a word in the Black Spear dictionary) The King is often seen in their company feeding and grooming them exclusively. In fact, so special are these creatures in the eyes of their master, he commanded the Shaman to create creatures specifically engineered to tend to their pens. In turn, the King’s Shaman has found more than one way of repurposing the byproducts of such a massive lifeform.
