FEATURED IN THE MAKUA VALLEY CALENDAR / . / Makua Beach Oahu Hawaii. / . / In 1964 the U.S. Army signed a 65-year lease with the State of Hawaii to use the adjacent valley for live fire training purposes. 45 years of environmental abuse has left the valley badly scarred with few trees and countless unexploded ordinance littering the landscape. / A recently completed court ordered Environmental Impact Statement by the Army suggests its preference to continue live fire training here. / This land contains Native Hawaiian culturally sensitive and sacred sites as well as endangered species and plants. / As a former Makua resident I would love to see this beautiful valley returned to the stewardship of the State and become a State Park for the use and enjoyment of all the people of Hawaii. .
