This woman is a victim of a seemingly never ending war in southern congo. She has suffered sexual violence (rape) so severe it has rendered her incontinent. She now exists purely as a result of a courageous charity called Heal Africa, and indeed her own inner strength and faith. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she stood up (which must have been painful), straightened her back and stared straight down the lens. No stopping to straighten her scarf, no preening, no fear. Just an honesty so raw, so uninhibited and so rare, I caught my breath and thought I’d never breath again. No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope that it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen, if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve. This is no time for ceremony. The question before the House is one of awful moment to this country. For my own part I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the debate. It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country. Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offense, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty towards the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings. Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren, till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth—to know the worst and to provide for it. I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past. And judging by the past, I wish to know what there has been in the conduct of the British ministry for the last ten years, to justify those hopes with which gentlemen have been pleased to solace themselves and the House? Is it that insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received? Trust it not, sir; it will prove a snare to your feet. Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss. Ask yourselves how this gracious reception of our petition comports with these warlike preparations which cover our waters and darken our land. Are fleets and armies necessary to a work of love and reconciliation? Have we shown ourselves so unwilling to be reconciled that force must be called in to win back our love? Let us not deceive ourselves, sir. These are the implements of war and subjugation—the last arguments to which kings resort. I ask gentlemen, sir, what means this martial array, if its purpose be not to force us to submission? Can gentlemen assign any other possible motives for it? Has Great Britain any enemy, in this quarter of the world, to call for all this accumulation of navies and armies? No, sir, she has none. They are meant for us; they can be meant for no other. They are sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the British ministry have been so long forging. And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer on the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resort to entreaty and humble supplication? What terms shall we find which have not been already exhausted? Let us not, I beseech you, sir, deceive ourselves longer. Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament. Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne. In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope. If we wish to be free - if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending - if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained, we must fight! I repeat it, sir, we must fight! An appeal to arms and to the God of Hosts is all that is left us! They tell us, sir, that we are weak—unable to cope with so formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year? Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard shall be stationed in every house? Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance, by lying supinely on our backs, and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are not weak, if we make a proper use of the means which the God of nature hath placed in our power. Three millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable—and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come! It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, “Peace! Peace!”—but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! I’ve been there, but got lost in all the maze of padded courtrooms and archive offices… then slipped out the back door before anyone could find me. Very Kafka. Featured in The Divine Feminine, Sisters in Arms and Painted Ladies groups Acrylic on 9×12 canvas board – a little inspiration from my favorite artist, Erte! She is a sky goddess, guardian of the stars and night sky, she’s the one that makes the sun set and the moon rise. She also stands as Justice one of the Major Arcana cards in a tarot deck. The two most important laws governed by Justice are really two sides of the same coin. First comes the law of cause and effect, stating that all events are connected and each present state is the result of all past states. This is a such strange idea to get your mind around because sometimes seemlingly meaningless actions will have great ramifications. Justice shows that every action you do will eventually have an effect, someday, and you really have no idea of knowing what that event is until it happens. Often the figure on the Justice card is pictured sitting in front of a curtain; this curtain hides the machinations of the universe that bring about these final results. From the law of cause and order develops the law of Karma, showing that all your actions will return to you eventually. They will be modified slightly, and they are often strengthened over time, but the lesson is still the same. As you sow, so shall you reap. This is really a simple elaboration of the law of cause and effect. Under this new law, not only will everything you do have an effect, everything you do will have an effect on you. This is where it becomes critical to be mindful of your actions, because everything you take will come back to you eventually. Before Justice, you have to answer for all your actions, right and wrong. Life, if nothing else, is fair. She raises her curtain to start a sunset or to bring on the night, all the while, behind it, the universe stirs. She is cause and effect embodied, Every sunset she makes sets into motion the timing for the next day. She governs the laws of the universe.

Lilith still reigns as a symbol of independent, life-loving, justice-seeking women who have been depicted in art, history and literature as sexual predators, demons, evil spirits and harlots. She may have been considered both warrior and seductress; I view neither of these as negatives. If she is shown as one who tricked men, I believe it was to teach them lessons; if she was blamed for inciting their lust, so have all women taken the blame for male desire in a world where sexuality is held sinful. / If we are to believe she kills mortals, can we not view her as we do the male god, as one who ‘giveth and taketh away’, who ends human life as He, divine ruler, deems necessary, or simply to maintain the balance of the Universe? Why do the qualities we admire in a male god make so little sense to us when embodied by a female deity that we demonize her? Why are they so threatening? This was a lot more cheery and colorful before uploading it onto RedBubble. (i’m not sure why the colors are sooo off over there!) The inspiration behind this new series (as if I needed another one, I know, I can’t help it!) is the tub, toilet, and sink in my new house. This house was built in the 50’s and let me tell you, it shows. My bathroom pieces are this funky robin’s egg blue….way retro. Anyways, I was trying to think of a creative way to keep the funky blue stuff but somehow decorate around it so…I’ve been dooding a series of my family in different bathroom scenes (sorry y’all, no real nudity!) with the colors of my bathroom. There you have it…my inspiration. In the print that I am going to buy of this one, the bathtub is a cheery yellow and the bubbles and parts of the shower curtain are that retro blue…as if you cared to know that! :D

One of the main elements involved in the (African) Yoruba divination system is the divination tray. This tray (Ifá) serves as the template on which sacred signs related to the personal concerns of a diviner’s client are traced as the point of departure for analysis. This time the idea was that of using this divination tray as a basic platform to display the main Orishas _ the African gods and goddesses_ and their peculiar attributes. / So this is basically a Cinema4D render, made in collaboration with artist Artpearl, who modelled the 3D divination tray. / Some visual effects were created and blended with Photoshop; there´s also a bit of digital painting. (CINEMA 4D is a commercial, cross-platform, high-end 3-D graphics application, produced by MAXON Computer, Germany. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—- “In Yoruba mythology, Shango is perhaps the most popular Orisha; he is a Sky Father, god of thunder and lightning. He is considered the center point of the religion as he represents the Oyo people of West Africa. / The energy given from this Deity is also a major symbol of African resistance against an enslaving European culture. He rules the color red and white; his sacred number is 6; his symbol is the oshe (double-headed axe), which represents swift and balanced justice. He is owner of the Bata (3 double-headed drums) and of music in general, as well as the Art of Dance and Entertainment.” / This image belongs to a series I´ve entitled “The Orishas Collection”. It’s also the only card in the major arcana that refers to the minors with the “trumps” displayed upon his table. If the reader believes the Magician stands for the Querent, then the Querent either is, or is currently finding himself eloquent and charismatic at this time. Both verbally and in writing, the magician is clever, witty, inventive and persuasive.

The territory of the air signs is the mind. Our mind consists of (1) our dual mind and (2) our neutral mind. Our dual mind consists of (1) our negative/protective mind and (2) our positive/expansive mind. The former warns us of negative outcomes and potential dangers. The later informs us of positive outcomes and rewarding potentialities. (see NMB #124 for more discussion of Libra and the 3 minds.) Our dualistic mind alternates between negative and positive. This function is needed to analyze, to discriminate and to evaluate information and alternatives. Without an arbitrator, however, our dualistic mind becomes confused and conflictual. When we get to the Libra stage of our evolution, we move above the horizon on our birth chart, where we enter the big wide world beyond our own personal reality. The Libra arena thrusts us into relationships. Interpersonal relationships are a central feature of our worldly endeavors. At our Libra stage of development, we realize how dysfunctional and conflicted our mind has become. We become aware of how our mental imbalances effect our relationships and our worldly success. We begin to realize how our mind is sabotaging us and out of control. We quest for an escape route out of our mental morass. THE DANCE OF POLARITIES AND THE SEARCH FOR STABILITY AND INNER PEACE The dance of the polarities and the variety of information that passes through our dualistic mind entertains Gemini (the first air sign). Libra (the second air sign) is very different. Libra desires stability and equanimity, not entertainment. The constant swing of the polarities bothers Libra, who desires to keep everything in balance. Libra likes harmony and peace. Libra tries to avoid conflict because it makes it feel uncomfortable. Everyone’s inner Libra searches for an alternative – (1) where we can escape mood swings and the battle ground of our rational mind, (2) where we can find an arbitrator and make wise choices, (3) where resolution is possible, and (4) where an experience of inner peace is available. VENUS AND LIBRA’S NATURE AND QUALITIES Libra is ruled by Venus. Venus is a benefic planet. Neither Venus nor Libra like to be confrontational or to be confronted. Libra’s polarity Mars/Aries gets charged up in confrontational encounters. Venus and Libra get deflated, confused and upset by any kind of conflict. The points below help us understand the nature and some of the qualities of Venus and Libra. (1) Like Venus, Libra likes to rest, to take things easy and doesn’t like hassle. (2) Libra is a thinking, reflecting being, who enjoys beauty, and developing ideas. (3) Libra likes creative and artistic pursuits, not hard or repetitive work. (4) Libra is idealistic and is prone to unrealistic expectations. (5) Libra likes perfection and doesn’t like flaws. (6) Libra is very sensitive and feels hurt by criticism or disapproval. (7) Libra tends to takes things too personally. Libra is interested in sharing, relating, cooperating, being fair, making life easier for itself and for others, and enjoys & fosters harmonious interactions. Libra’s energy is quiet, unobtrusive, calm, and content. Libra may appear this way on the outside, but inside Libra’s mind and emotions are not at peace. Libra, like all of us, must EARN this serene state of being. LIBRA ISSUES, CONFLICTS AND THEMES Next, we examine the nature of Libra’s existential dilemma and pain. (1) Although Libra wants and tries to please, it is usually trapped in some kind of interpersonal quandary. This is because it can’t be all things to all people and offensive to none. Our inner Libra needs to learn that we can’t please everyone all the time; and we don’t have to. Our inner Libra also needs to get in touch with, honor and learn how to meet our own needs. We need to exercise empathy toward ourselves before we can authentically express empathy for others. (2) Libra fears disharmony and wants everything to be perfect. Libra hopes to avoid the negative consequences of choices, so it remains indecisive and avoids making decisions or taking action. In an attempt to avoid feeling more uncomfortable, closing off options or alienating anyone, Libra circumvents taking responsibility. However, the reality of Earth school is that life is an experiment; and we learn through experience. We have to make choices, set our best intentions and hope for the best. We have to learn how (1) to make decisions, take action and to be responsible for the above, (2) to be at peace with our choices, and (3) to be detached from others’ choices, opinions and actions.
