Looking for tigers all morning without luck, then charged by an elephant. Turned around in jeep and took 3 quck shots to capture this obliging deer as it came out of the bush on cue. (Corbett National Park, India)

‘Oheo Gulch, on Maui, is the place I go and camp in my tent, when the congestion of modern-day life gets me down. ‘Oheo is spiritual, full of life, and will energize one’s soul. I made this image in near darkness, after all the tourists had gone home. I layered 5 long exposures—from about 4 seconds to a minute, or more. The place is difficult to capture by camera, but I think I have come close on this one. A large canvas of ‘Oheo Twilight hangs in my own home.

The lion (Panthera leo) is one of four big cats in the genus Panthera, and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight,[4] it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, which was about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru. Lions live for around 10–14 years in the wild, while in captivity they can live over 20 years. In the wild, males seldom live longer than ten years as fights with rivals occasionally cause injuries.[5] They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. A pride of lions consists of related females and offspring and a small number of adult males. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator, although they will scavenge if the opportunity arises. While lions do not typically hunt humans selectively, some have been known to become man-eaters and seek human prey. The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50 percent over the past two decades in its African range.[6] Lion populations are untenable outside of designated reserves and national parks. This started out as an LPS challenge image but I removed the contributed image and recreated a new painting from my camp-out trip to the Wild Animal Park. It was called Roar and Snore and we camped in the tents (see on far right) and them spent the next day visiting the park behind the scenes. It was wonderfully fun. Rooaarrrr… That’s not me being hostile, I’m just saying hello! Some may think I’m a fighter – aggressive and dangerous – but in truth I’m a gentle creature. There’s nothing like a peaceful afternoon enjoying a few drops of tropical rain and hanging out with the band. I love it too when the sun goes down, and its time for me to curl up in my cosy nest for a wee snooze. Feel free to throw me a few leaves and seeds. Oh, and the odd termite or two won’t go astray! Thanks chumps.
